Tobias Tak
The fact that Dutch-born artist Tobias Tak once had to choose between a career as a graphic novelist or one as a tap dancer seems to make perfect sense, based on his surreal style that evokes turn-of-the-century story books and films of the ’30s and ’40s. I haven’t seen his tapping skills, but judging by his comics, I’m glad he chose the former path.

I few years back, I found the most amazing painting of this Mexican comedy superhero character called Chapulin Colorado (red grasshopper) by Rhode Montijo. It led me to go through his work at the time and it was just as beautiful, with characters from a child’s nightmare and pretty colours everywhere, along with Mexican references to masked luchadores and mythological figures of the Aztecs. I’ve been searching for the artist of the clever Day Of The Dead Presidents piece since it flashed past me somewhere last year. Luckily Brighton based Illustrator Matt Taylor has just contributed to Graniph, throwing his work back into the spotlight. Along with National Geographic Taylor is influenced by comic books. There’s a definite Paul Pope vibe in some of his more detailed pieces.

I’m totally floored by British illustrator Matthew Lyons’ retro-futuristic work. At the tender age of 22, Lyons is definitely someone to watch out for.
Ten Masked Men are a British parody band that does death metal covers of famous pop songs by Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and many others. One of my favorites is their cover of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me a River’. It’s epic.

A culmination of nearly four years of writing and recording, Omaha quintet, The Faint are preparing to release their fifth album, Fasciinatiion, on August 5 on the band’s own newly-formed label, blank.wav. Working without any time constraints, the songs went through many recorded incarnations before finding their final forms. The result is the best album in the band’s career, a record that is the purest culmination of The Faint’s brilliant musical instincts, ideas and aesthetic, with each member contributing equally to its creation.
With the recent financial qualms, a moment of reflection takes over as we begin to wonder how we all became so out of touch with reality. Somehow Luxury lost its way and mistook itself for decadence, joining the Bling-Bling parade and gravitating towards the streets of self-indulgence. Yet, the true essence of Luxury, as the divine Coco Chanel states ‘is not in the richness and ornateness, but in the absence of vulgarity’. Bravo, I say! Read more
