Miami’s up-and-coming arts district got a little bit cooler last year with the opening of Wynwood Kitchen & Bar, an art gallery-meets-bistro-meets-watering hole that has Miami hipsters swooning. Built inside an old warehouse, Wynwood has a sleek, minimalist look that provides a perfect backdrop for the art on display. An 11-foot-high sculpture of a rainbow-hued man greets guests upon entry, and murals by Shepard Fairey — better known for creating that iconic HOPE poster featuring Barack Obama — adorn the walls. Was poking around at Dad’s Big Plan and found this rather awesome looking concept car called the Maininki, which was designed by Finnish designer Antti Eskeli. It has an adjustable chassis length so it can morph from a luxury sedan into a compact hatchback.
Ten Masked Men are a British parody band that does death metal covers of famous pop songs by Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and many others. One of my favorites is their cover of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me a River’. It’s epic.
The controversial and multifaceted International contemporary art exhibition Trailblazers hits Sydney this month. Boutwell Draper Gallery will grace multimedia works by pioneering Australian, American and European artists from November 19 onwards. I’m thrilled to see groundbreaking pieces by Ben Frost, Kill Pixie, Copyright and Cleon Patterson [above], to name a few. The vast array of paintings, photography, sculpture, installation, video and digital arts is on display until December 13. C’mon, you know you want to culture your soul.
I’ve been reading Julia Wertz’s web comic, The Fart Party, which is simply a first person account of her every day life. The artwork is pretty rudimentary, but that works to the comic’s advantage, making it rather accessible and earnest seeming. Updated every few days, it’s not hard to keep up, and you never have to wait long to get your next fix.
Concept albums have always been a hit or miss affair, all too often to be taken with a pinch of salt. Some work brilliantly; many fall flat on their esoteric face. Dr John’s response to Hurricane Katrina is an intriguing album. Some is rousing, some depressing: it’s littered with political statements, perhaps too much at times but given it’s purpose the over-saturation isn’t surprising. Read more
To be honest, I can’t bring myself to care about the new TSA scanners in airports. It’s not like they can’t already see and know everything about you already. However, I love these garments with the 4th Amendment printed on them in metallic ink so that the text show up clearly on scanners.
