Short Shorts
Now we’re not ones to create alarmism, but with summer in Australia almost here, we feel it’s our duty to warn the men in our lives. Board short lengths are on the rise, along with the fear of knee exposure amongst the male population. We know what you’re thinking. Real boardies cover the knee. You can surf in them, ride your pushy down to the beach in them, heck — you can even head up to the pub for a beer in them. But this season short shorts are here to stay, so it’s only a matter of time before you find yourself in the foetal position on a change room floor. Come on. What’s the worst that could happen — that people will see you have knees? Well, I guess you could find yourself on the Dads in Short Shorts
blog.

Take a detour off Newtown’s main drag and you’ll find more than just unaffordable terraces and a place to park your car. The corner of Wilson and Brown is home to Satellite Espresso and one of the most impressive breakfast menus we’ve seen in a while. Step out of your egg and bacon comfort zone because there are more delicious options, like the fried herbed mash with kassler (double-smoked pork loins), homemade relish and rocket. Read more
If you’re not in the southern hemisphere, then we’d like to apologise in advance because one look at Seventh Wonderland’s latest swimwear collection will be a cruel reminder that there’s a summer happening somewhere. But it’s this very emotion that continues to inspire Sydney-based designers Bonnie Coumbe and Carlos Aviles. Read more
Boys have had to way too easy for far too long. Back in the day, it was either budgie smugglers or a pair of knee-covering boardies. Not exactly a hard choice. The only problem is that no matter how many boardies you owned, they all produced the same look. A bit like Zoolander with his Blue Steel, Le Tigre, Ferrari and our personal favourite Magnum. But that was before Aussie label Franks hit the scene and before you had options. Now you can kick around at the beach wearing a short leg or mid leg alternative in a variety of colours and hand-drawn prints. Oh, and they work really well with that low-cut v-neck tee your mates love to give you crap about. Read more

I predict this lasting about as long as the Duran Duran reunion tour.
No doubt they will be big on the Gold Coast and Sydney’s northern beaches.
Lemme guess, they come in day-glo colours as well?
Retro’s fun ‘n’ all, but there’s nothing funny about knobbly white stick-legs.
Cover that sh*t up, kids.

New York photographer Jennifer Loeber’s series, Cruel Story of Youth, is based on the Rowe Camp for teenagers, where she spent some time and which is ‘grounded in the ideals of a counter-cultural past and freed from the forced constraints of a conventional camp experience. It’s a glimpse into what the world would be like if no ideas were too absurd, and eccentricity was the rule, not the exception’. Read more
The scientists explored the surface of our moon until they stood facing the foreboding presence of The Lunar Crystal. The two men stood in awe of the crystal’s existence. They stared without tact; oblivious to the inquisitive voices on the other end of their earpieces. Read more

Summertime at McCarren Park in Williamsburg is picturesque. It’s often filled with a mix of people, old and young, picnicking or sitting in the shade, running along the track or playing soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from). It’s also connected to a now defunct McCarren (swimming) pool which transforms into an outdoor concert space on Sundays during the summer. In the past, performers such as Leslie Feist, M.I.A., The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Broken Social Scene have performed. Read more
Though most people in the West think of mahjong as a mysterious game old Chinese people play, it’s actually gets quite rowdy when people get together to play it. Rowdy is certainly a good adjective for Mahjongg, the exquisitely danceable electro-whatever outfit from Chicago who draw as much from Afrobeat as they do vocoder-laden sleaze rock from the 70s.

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.

For my dad, short shorts NEVER went out of fashion. He still wears them every non-work day, weather permitting!
