Mini Opera Space in Munich

Designed by Vienna-based architecture firm Coop Himmelblau, this small-scale, 300-seat performance space has been submitted on behalf of the Munich Opera Festival, to be held in 2010. As ArtInfo notes:’The approximately 6,000-square-foot pavilion is anchored by a sloping, trapezoidal component, but characterized by an outcropping of pyramidal structures that have been “generated parametrically through the overlay of sound frequencies from Jimi Hendrix’s song Purple Haze and Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni. The shapes are meant to reflect and reduce sound’. opera house vienna

The massive sound of And So I Watch You From Afar

Don’t get confused by the unusually long name of this band. Once you start listening to their music, words won’t matter any more. I saw this band for the first time in Vienna as they opened a show for the super-group, Them Crooked Vultures, and I have to say, it should have been the other way round. This year they stopped by in Vienna for a single show, and again, I was stunned how far their skills had expanded. They create a sea of sound into which your soul will eventually float away.

Vienna’s Hammock House

Wanting to create a space where the public could chill out, the architect team of Heri and Salli designed Flederhaus in Vienna. Created for the MuseumsQuartier, this house-shaped structure invites people to come in, relax in one of its many hammocks and enjoy their surroundings from a new point of view. If only all public spaces were this inviting. Read more

The Vegetable Orchestra

Have you heard your veggies today? Eat them if you want. But we’ve been enjoying the sweet, sweet music emanating from a medley of fresh vegetables in Austria. The Vegetable Orchestra is truly a one of a kind genius ensemble composed of a few clever and talented musicians in Vienna. It sounds too quirky to be for real, right? That’s what we thought anyway. New Banksy artwork angers the Catholic Church

Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. And who are we to disagree? Read more

Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design

Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

The latest project of former punk rock drummer Andreas Asingh from Copenhagen, I literally stumbled across Small through my participation at the By:Larm music conference in Oslo. As one of the many up-and-coming bands in Denmark, their sound is a cross between M83, Remote, and Giorgio Moroder; captivating and adventurous, and full of strong melodies.
