United Red Army, explores the pitfalls of communism

|One of the best pieces of art I’ve ever witnessed, this film articulates the pitfalls of communism and in the process answers one of my own longstanding questions: ‘What happens when a solid alternative political theory is put in to practice in a capitalist society?’ It’s a reconstruction of the history of the United Red Army faction, which had its roots in the 60s when Japanese students protested America using Japan as a staging base for its war in Vietnam.
Director Koji Wakamatsu is faithful both to the facts and those involved, portraying extremist students not as monsters or lunatics, but reasonable and idealistic students willing to die for their beliefs. The different murders, hijackings, robberies and the final siege are all faithfully reproduced, and while three hours long, seldom have I ever been so gripped or deeply affected by any film, either fact or fiction.

Japanese dental students practice technique on sex dolls
From the WTF files, some dental students in Japan are practicising their oral techniques, as well as their people skills, on hapless Sex Dolls created by Yoshida Dental Manufacturing. The Hanako Showa 2 comes complete with tongue and cheeks (tongue in cheek?) and punctuates its time in the dental chair with an array of human emotions and expressios, such as ‘blink, cough, sneeze, choke and move its eyes’. Surreal!. Perhaps one can take my place for my next check-up.
Awesome t shirt design by La Mano Fria
La Mano Fria is a graphic artist who uses sampled imagery and re-configures them and in a way mirrors what hip-hop producers do with vinyl records. From these appropriated images, he reconfigures text and shapes to form something that’s in-between hand=printed posters and early digital artifact heavy graphics. These shirts are produced through Beams T in Japan.

A delightful uncomfortable film, told from the point of view of a broken woman. Kevin’s just not right, and that’s obvious from the outset as mother Eva battles to bring him up in a world where the onus is put squarely back on the mother. The intensity is poured on throughout, as tragedy seems imminent. Read more

This statement from Team Genius leader Drew Hermiller was the jumping off point in the creation of the band’s debut self-titled full-length album, one of the most interesting and eclectic pop records of the year. ‘Basically it’s a reaction to the modern way music is consumed and listened to’, Hermiller says. ‘The idea of an album with a focused sound and a complete statement kind of gets lost now-a-days. Everyone shuffles around, so I thought “why not write an album that does the same thing?” Luckily, the band did an awesome job of keeping up with it’.
