Athens, Georgia trio Romanenko describes its sound as ‘Mary Timony fronting the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’, which seems to refer to the way that guitarist and vocalist J. Marston’s quasi-depressing but thoughtful vocals punctuate concise and imaginative punk-influenced pop songs. The band’s self-produced 2009 album Squid Record takes listeners on a journey through myriad moods of confusion and rebellion.
