I found this great animated short by Royal College of Art graduate John Kelly on zefrank.com. It has a great retro quality about it, like weird little cartoons I used to see as a kid on PBS. It’s also infuriatingly true to life.

I’ve been revisiting the films of Chicago-based animator Jim Trainor lately and hoping he’ll release something new soon. I first saw the above film, The Bats, when I was living in the Windy City almost ten years ago, and it hasn’t lost its charm. Trainor’s main theme is describing animal behaviors via dry narration, drawing out the discomfort humans feel when confronted with both the ugly and the beautiful realities of nature.
This surreal and vaguely frightening short is Britain’s answer to Paper Rad, but with slightly drier humor, a less discerning viewer might miss the tongue-in-cheek-ness and take this video for an earnest animation for children.
Experimental filmmaker Vince Collins made this stunning, but disturbing short animated version of the Alice in Wonderland story in 1983, but it’s still one of the most tripped-out things I’ve ever seen. It’s quite inspiring, actually.

Anointed Best New Band of 2009 by Baltimore’s City Paper, Sick Weapons embody basically what’s so great about this town — trash, and good times. They spit out sloppy, warbling, ear-piercing punk that’s more giddy than it is snarling, with frontwoman Ellie Beziat channeling Poly Styrene without being overly conscious of it. With songs like If You Love Me Take Me to the Hospital, The Prettiest Racist in Town, and Orgy on the China Train, it’s apparent these guys have their heads in a lot of unseemly places, but not up their own butts.

UK-based design firm DIY Kyoto has come up with a clever plan to allow homeowners to visibly see how much energy they are using in their home at any given moment. Wattson, a portable and wireless device, hooks up to the main fuse box of any home and a bright display shows how much energy is being used in either in watts or cost over the past 28 days. The program also allows the user to put the information online in a community, where ideas about saving electricity are shared.

We got the inside word from Josh Diamond of New York experimental group, Gang Gang Dance, on the music that is moving him right now and he started off by propping the beautiful Ryuichi Sakamoto track, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence: ‘It’s just an amazing piece of music — serene, austere (in a heavy, beautiful way), emotional, a great mix of electronic sounds, patient, and a wonderful melody, with a quality of yearning for a better place. Give me a minor key song anytime. Yup, I’ll take the heartfelt purity of an introspective trawl over any warm and fuzzy major key shimmy. I once asked UK band The Editors why there aren’t more cheerful songs in the world: ‘Three words’, vocalist Tom Smith replied. ‘Shiny Happy People’. He smirked. I grimaced. Enough said.

This is the mob scene that was outside the Ugg Boot store on Mercer Street, Soho, yesterday as I made my way through the harping hustle and flow of the downtown post-Christmas shopping crowds. And it’s a pretty familiar sight during winter in New York, with long queues invariably gathered along this stretch of road, waiting impatiently for their own little piece of Down Under warmth. Having never worn Ugg boots, I can’t attest for their ability to keep out the icy chill of a 3pm breeze. But surely the well worn feet of a stampede of New Yorkers can’t be wrong? Read more
