The Futurebirds are an unruly band of boys from Athens, Georgia, but they might as well have been reared in the backwoods of Woodstock by Levon Helm himself. Their debut release, Hampton’s Lullaby, is out on July 13 via Autumn Tone Records.

People are weird and, as such, have come up with many a weird way to keep themselves amused while skirting the lines they themselves have designed in hopes of making society a sustainable and ‘fair’ place to work and play. The automobile, even in its waning status as facilitator of freedom, adds a rogue element to this mix. Simply put, it often makes people rush, and where there’s friction, there’s debris. This blog from an anonymous parking meter attendant shares some of the results of these interactions with us.
A snippet from Lauren Gallaspy’s statement: ‘I want to make work through which desire, pathos, and obsession are encouraged, and the translation of event into imagination is made physical — form follows fetish’. Gallaspy’s work, in both the two and three dimensional formats, manages to unite opposition, an act which both exposes and captures the sublime.
Athens, Georgia-based visual artist David Hale began his ascent in the public eye as a student, garnering attention with his stylistic, nature-inspired paintings. Over the past few years his diligence in the studio and streets, as well as time spent doing live painting for touring musicians has traced the development of a strong spiritual-symbolic language in his work. His recent entry into the tattooing medium has also been radically successful.

Beast is a new collaboration between the Montreal-based French producer, Jean-Phi Goncalves, frontman of the electro band Plaster, and singer Betty Bonifassi. Their sound inhabits a place where the cinematic grandeur of Portishead meets the immediacy of Rage Against the Machine. Bonifassi calls it ‘trip rock’, invoking the way haunting choirs and glitchy electronic bits run underneath saw-toothed bass and grinding guitars, and she may be onto something. Always an inspiration! Jeff’s body of work is huge and all of it gorgeous. His image vocabulary is totally his own, even as he copiously honors the graphic world that inspired it. He understands design perfectly, his women are fantastically sexy, and his line quality is unsurpassed. i have one of his pieces up in my kitchen!
