David Favrod
Working out of Switzerland, Japanese-born photographer David Favrod says of this series, ‘As my father had to travel for his work a lot, I was mainly brought up by my mother who taught me her principles and her culture. When I was 18, I asked for double nationality at the Japanese embassy, but they refused because it is only given to Japanese women who wish to obtain their husband’s nationality’.
‘It is from this feeling of rejection and also from a desire to prove that I am as Japanese as I am Swiss that this work was created. Gaijin is a fictional recital, a tool for my quest for identity, where auto-portraits imply an intimate and solitary relationship that I have with myself. The mirror image is frozen in a figurative alter ego that serves as an anchor point. The aim of this work is to create my own Japan, in Switzerland, from memories of my journeys when I was small, my mother’s stories, popular and traditional culture and my grandparents war recitals’.

Of this series, Soviet Women Dreaming of Future, she says, ‘The full name of this series of self-portraits is Soviet Peasant Woman Dreaming of her Bright Capitalistic Future. I was born in the era of Perestroika and didn’t live during Soviet era that much. Nevertheless, my image abroad, no mater how hard I try, is always impacted by my Soviet background. People are either joking or seriously think, that I’m different because I came from Ukraine. Even my foreign friends jokingly call me red or soviet. I love traveling and I feel myself very cosmopolitan. But every time I’m applying for a visa to travel to EU I feel myself as a Soviet peasant woman who wants to benefit from Western capitalistic wealth. So I created this series, because I wanted to show the stereotypical exaggerated view of me in the West’. Read more

I had the pleasure of meeting painter Maria Calderon a few years back through some mutual friends. Even then her work was stunning. It seemed as though you could stand back and take in everything you thought you could, and if you moved up to a piece, you were pulled in to all the different stories, different landscapes, within a single painting. The vibrant colors and never ending spacial trickery really does it for me.
Clusters of mysterious balloons, packs of terrifying cats, bunnies, and burning people, and other absurd or abstract elements haunt Andrea Galvani’s beautiful and eerie landscape photos. The Italian artist’s work seems to comment on man’s hand in altering nature. Read more

These twin sixty-story towers to be built in Malaysia feature a combination of ‘continuous, flowing, double-curved perforated surface with a flickering, crystalline, transparent single-curved surface that is triangulated on an enormous scale’. The design by New York-based architectural firm, Asymptote, includes a 400,000 square foot retail section and the Penang Performing Arts centre.
I ran a series of 80s nights in New York last year — showing cult 80s movies and playing classic cuts from that era of kitsch and spice — purely so I could spin After The Fire’s Der Kommissar over and over. Yessir, this was the future of music in 1983. Pity no one was listening.
