One Ring Zero’s Recipe Project
What happens when you put your favorite recipe to song? Well, Brooklyn-based band One Ring Zero set on a mission to find out. The result? One Ring Zero’s Recipe Project: a compilation of recipes by the band’s favorite chefs sung out verbatim and set to the chef’s musical styling of choice.
Lamb shanks roasted in paper, octopus with black eyed peas, and spaghetti with sweet 100 tomatoes are among the titles. From heavy metal to folkier styles, each song follows the recipe literally, even listing ingredients (like ’1 ½ cups distilled white vinegar’) and methods (‘Remove from the marinade. Pat dry’). Surprisingly, the songs are better than you’d think and the pure creativity and spirit behind it is definitely charming. And that’s not all One Ring Zero has to offer by way of food — they also have a food blog; then again, who doesn’t?

A Melbourne native once said to me: to find the good bars, you have to look for the bins in alleyways. Section 8 totally fits that quota. It is a bar that is a. in an alleyway, and b. filled with trash. As enticing as that sounds, I must make it clear that the alleyway is actually an old carpark in Chinatown and the trash is not exactly trash. But don’t let that stop you. Section 8 is pumping. If you ever happen to find yourself riding across the mid-west on horseback with an iPod jangling about in your holster, be sure to let Calexico soundtrack the experience. They’re cleverly fusing a range of genres, mixing some good old country with US indie, a bit of jazz and even, in 2003’s Feast of Wire, some smatterings of electronica. Lead singer Joey Burns gives a healthy amount of cowboy twang and the soaring orchestral background and sweet country guitar licks add a real atmosphere to the music.
