The sport of Extreme Ironing
Extreme Ironing started in 1997 when a group of friends decided to iron in some rocks near their houses in the city of Leicester, Great Britain. The activity was risky because they were in danger of falling, which is why they thought to turn it into an extreme sport.
This anecdote gave birth to the activity of Extreme Ironing. Its official website recommends that the clothes to be ironed must not be the best garment you have in your closet because a calculation mistake can cause the loosening of the garment itself. World and regional tournaments are organized and often Extreme Ironing is combined with other extreme sports so that the followers can practice both sports for the price of one.

The traditional game of Rock, Paper, Scissors is generally considered to be a children’s activity, but some adults use it to solve their differences. And, get this, it’s also now a ‘sport‘ controlled by an international association with tournaments played in many countries. The highest authority is the World Rock Paper Scissors Society located in Toronto, Canada, which regulates and promotes the sport and organizes conferences, an annual retreat, and monthly tournaments in clubs and institutions. Iraqi-American artist Wafaa Bilal spent an entire month living in a Chicago art gallery where he had rigged a webcam and remote controlled paintball gun which visitors online or at the actual gallery could use to shoot at him. The piece highlighted the danger everyday Iraqi citizens face both in terms of actual violence and the vitriol generated by the controversial and geopolitically convoluted war. The experience re-triggered the post-traumatic stress disorder that Bilal had acquired in his home country. The installation as well as his life as an activist, artist, and refugee are documented in his book, Shoot An Iraqi: Art, Life and Resistance Under the Gun.

This makes me smile. Truthfully though, all you need for extreme ironing is a small room, a cat, a puppy, and a two-year old. Don’t try THAT at home kiddos!
