Vladislav Delay video directed by Carolina Melis

This is the new video for Vladislav Delay — the alter-ego of Finnish composer Sasu Ripatti, also known for his work as Luomo and Uusitalohas. Taken from the recent Tummaa album, the video for the single Toive was directed by Carolina Melis (who has previously made videos for labelmates Efterklang and Colleen) and Lorenzo Sportiello, and is a journey into a spectacular miniature landscape, with crystals forming and transforming into new substances. Ok Go’s WTF?

With 175 million video streams, OK Go is the most-downloaded band ever. The group created an international phenomenon in 2005 with its A Million Ways video, which featured the four members dancing in a backyard, and followed it with the decade’s most-viewed music video, Here It Goes Again. Working with friend and video director Tim Nackashi, OK Go has cooked up a color-drenched video for lead single WTF? using props purchased at the 99¢ Only Store and the band’s trademark single-shot approach.

Efterklang’s Secret Playlist

Otherworldly pop songs, both ambitious and engagingly intimate. Breathtaking panoramas of sound with few clear antecedents. Efterklang make music for the inspired. They recently began work on their third full-length album, with a release expected in the spring of 2010. So we checked in with them to get the inside word on the muisc that will be driving their new sound. They started with the Heather Broderick song, Cottonwood Bay [listen below]: ‘Heather is the sister to Peter Broderick, and like Peter did two years ago, Heather will be moving to Europe to join the Efterklang live band starting early next year. We have already played with her several times and we love her and we love her music. This song is from her debut album, From The Ground’.

Aurie Ramirez’s elegant watercolors have something outsider-y about them, with a slight nod of Henry Darger, but the fantasy world she depicts is less manic and angry — the whimsical and characters that inhabit her work seem more playful and less tormented by religious repression. Read more

Interior design website, Apartment Therapy, just posted some amazing pictures of ’70s rock stars in their parents’ homes. My favorite is of David Crosby and his dad [below]. The two look so completely opposite of each other that it’s hard to believe that it’s Crosby’s real dad. They also look like they’re barely concealing the contempt they have for each other. Crosby’s father was an Academy-Award-winning cinematographer who shot Tabu and High Noon, amongst other well-known films. Read more

Beijing-based band Hanggai write original songs in the traditional folk styles of their Mongolian ancestors — throat-singing, horsehair fiddles, lutes — spearheading an Asian version of the old-time revival. Though it’s only through the digital age that the rest of the world can access this beautiful music, it makes you want to slow down and reflect on what we’ve lost as a species. This stuff makes every flavor of the month indie band seem vapid and meaningless.
