Starless and Bible Black

Named after a 1965 track by jazz pianist Stan Tracey rather than the album by King Krimson, Starless and Bible Black draw heavily from prog and jazz to create their spaced-out, stargazing sound that feels like novocaine to the brain stem. The band evokes dark forests and calling loons with Moog, guitar, and wood-nymph vocals, yet nothing threatening lurks in their woods, just glassy-eyed gnomes sipping cocktails.

” THOUGH THEY CLAIM OTHERWISE” Nice, you start off your review calling the band liars. Not the best way to impart credibility.

Sounds more like a polite version of The Velvets with all those Major 3rds nicely tuned up.
“Bra-less And Slightly Slack” As Billy The Bruford might have said. And the Trio (an un-intended reference to another song from the same Crimson album) seem to be a 5-piece.
Anyhoo… It don’t sound proggy to me.

Um, ok. I am baking bread right now. You want some?

Typical snide response. Well done, you are fitting the mold of the holier than thou music reviewer rather nicely.

I personally know both the band and the label and they really did not get the name from a King Crimson Album.

And yes, with a bit of butter please.

Gerry Mak said | 18 November, 2009

“holier than thou music reviewer?” Are you serious? You think I get prestige out of doing this? I’m a blogger, not a journalist, and I’m just giving a shout out to a band I saw last week. I think you take the internet way too seriously.

Gerry Mak said | 18 November, 2009

They were a trio when I saw them last week.

I do this shit to help bands out. I only write about artists and musicians I like. That’s the only perk for me. I know you think I’m some high-paid rock critic who has an inflated sense of self worth, but really, there’s no such thing as a high-paid critic anymore, and the people with inflated sense of self are the people who comment on blogs, not the people who write for them. I wasn’t “reviewing” the band, I was trying to describe them. No one gives a shit about my opinion. I just see something I like and I pound out some words to describe why I like them. No one cares about anyone else’s opinions anymore, including yours and mine. People are just looking for some slight nudges towards things they may or may not like, but ultimately, they’re the ones who judge. That assumption dictates how I approach this job.

No worries mate.
If you would have just replied ” I see your point, article corrected. ” or even ” Thanks for the info” it would have been done deal.

I also work in the independent music industry and my life’s goal is helping to promote good music, labels and artists.
Appreciate you updating the information and also for the good you do.

I agree that this is more Velvet Underground than anything else. And is she singing in French? I hear no jazz nor prog, mostly just the Velvets. Pleasant, but not understanding the lyrics, my French is not up to sung French, hard to say if there is anything else of interest in the music.

Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like Neil Finn. His voice rasps with all the sincerity and integrity of a thousand heartfelt melodies. Heck, I’d probably trade my prized collection of Archie comics for just the chorus on this song. Driving Me Mad? You betcha(dupa). This man is a treasure. Bow low indeed.
