Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has plenty of music, art, gentrification, and hipsters, but it was missing one thing: a sex shop! I can’t wait to swing by the opening of Shag on November 20, for live music, art, and, yes, body painting! You just can’t beat sex in the city.

Led by talented designer Amelia Coulter (who has a degree in sculpture), the Brooklyn-based cookie makers use the medium as a small canvas, using icing like paint to shape intricate patterns onto layers of doughy naughtiness.

Victorian Photocollage exhibition at the Met
Anyone who has seen my art knows about how endlessly inspired I am by macabre, Victorian art, and writing. Well, pass the smelling salts as the recently-opened Victorian Photocollage exhibition at the Met in New York makes me swoon. 48 works from 1850-1860 combine animal heads with human bodies (my favorites), or depict fantastical landscapes and other curiosities. Made primarily by aristocratic women to be shared amongst friends, the photocollages shed a unique perspective on how even the stuffiest members of society are able to express their creativity.

Kimberly Dawn Recordings, an artist-run micro-label out of Tennessee, designed the artwork for an EP off Endless Endless Endless’ self-released album, Black Talisman. For just $4, you get to own a numbered CDR (edition of fifty hand-stamped, with an attached laser etched talisman) and listen to the dreamy, ‘post-noise’ music comprised of guitars, vocals, and a Gameboy. I almost forgot — metal is really about being drunk, pissed, offensive, and satanic. I have Bestial Mockery to thank for this. Their no-frills black thrash is barebones and snarling without being too dead-pan serious. These guys from Sweden are clearly having a blast worshiping the Dark One in the tradition of old-school bands like Venom, early Bathory, and Sodom. Nothing too original here, but it’s fun as hell.
71 is the kind of place which is small enough to miss, but once you see it, you realize everyone somehow knows about it. It’s set three steps down from the sidewalk level, and it’s always packed, except for week late nights and mid-mornings. Even though their service is not the friendliest — like any other spot in New York that’s too cool for school — 71 has a noticeably loyal clientele. Lots of writers hang out with their computers, while photographers check out the scene, and artists meet up with their reps. Besides hot and cold drinks, including their own coffee, they also offer a great selection of pastries, sandwiches and my friend Nicolas’ favorite chicken soup ever.
In my next life, I want to sing like Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison. Oh, and grow a lush beard, so I can play in their band. Better start cracking.
