This new construction in Dubai has been designed to ‘harness solar energy for heat, power and illumination’. The residential, hotel and entertainment complex is expected to be certified by a LEED Gold rating.

At the height of Dubai’s outrageous building boom, all manner of ideas — from the sensible to the totally unbelievable — were entertained. The Blue Crystal Floating Iceburg lodge, powered by solar cells and intended to ‘harness the world’s natural energy sources, keeping it self-sufficient’, seems like an odd fit for an environment built upon an arid and uncompromising desert. World’s tallest Arch bridge, Dubai
Not content with unveiling the world’s tallest building, nearly bankrupt Dubai is also constructing the world’s tallest Arch bridge. Designed by New York architects, Fxfowle, the bridge, which is scheduled to be completed in 2012, will be one mile long, 670 feet tall, and will carry more than 2,000 vehicles an hour in each direction.
This rather bizarre looking building designed by James Law Cybertecture for the dynamic Dubai skyline was scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. The aptly-named Shuffle Towers is divided into sub-stratas and literally shuffles, with the top section allocated for apartments, the middle area for offices, and the bottom to house a giant shopping mall. According to the architects, the design “allows the twisting angle between the office tower and the residents tower to change over time, affording different views over the seasons’. Ah, we see. And we’ll see, too, if it ever actually sees the bright light of the Dubai sunshine. Read more

Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design
Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Named after the first openly gay politician in US history, Harvey Milk make some rather testosterone-heavy tunes. While appealing mostly to the stoner-rock and indie-metal set, the quintet from Athens, Georgia, aren’t afraid of a little melody, as the almost pop track Motown on their latest album, Life … the Best Game in Town, proves. But more often than not, the band gets down and dirty with some knuckle-dragging sludge rock. Amid the haze of searing guitar squeals, menacing power chords, and seismic bass rumbling, though, are some almost math-rock flourishes that hint at the brains behind the brawn.
Two of the nicest dudes I’ve ever met own and design the ridiculously cool clothing line, Kane & Unke. It’s pretty much all I have in my closet. They used to be sold exclusively at Metropark, but have recently fired up their own online store which I’m told will be up and running around July.

Pitched as ‘Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art’, Disorder Disorder is running until November 14 at Penrith Regional Gallery. It’ll be well worth the trip out west of Sydney: the Australian, Japanese, American and European cast reads like a warriors of street art roundup and includes Mike Giant, Ed Templeton, Anthony Lister [artwork above], Ozzie Wright, and Jonathan Zawada.
