KAWS creme de corps
Random collaborations always come as a pleasant surprise. This time New York-based graffiti artist KAWS (aka Brian Donnelly) has joined forces with lavish beauty product manufacturer, Kiehl’s, in a bid to raise money for non-profit art initiative RxArt. KAWS’ design adorns an exclusive line of Kiehl’s skin moisturizers, with all proceeds benefiting RxArt’s mission to install art pieces in US hospitals.

I’m loving New York painter Bonnie Durham’s new work. Evoking the long-necked beauties of Mannerists and the highly stylized work of the Surrealists, Durham seems also to have tapped into a strange cross between J.J. Audubon’s spirit and the ghost of an 80s era gutter-punk (think gorgeous birds and drip-painting). Just coming down from the high of yet another solo show, Bonnie is currently gearing up for an inaugural group show next month at the Six by Six Gallery in Manhattan.
Yuko Shimizu’s PS96 Bronx mural
As part of the Robin Hood Foundation, a charity organization whose mission it is to fight poverty in New York City, Lost At E Minor contributor and in-demand illustrator in her own right, Yuko Shimizu — in collaboration with designer Stefan Sagmeister — recently completed an eleven panel mural at PS96 in The Bronx. It’s hard to believe but Royal Headache, from Sydney’s Western suburbs, were recently unheard of until they suddenly catapulted out of obscurity thanks to the digital age working its magic once again. Lush melodies coupled with heavy distortion is the basic framework behind the band’s post-punk sound. Their song Eloise, in particular, is a catchy, garage-pop gem. My pennies predict the days of recording lo-fi tracks on dictaphones are no more for these lads who are set to share the stage with Pavement next year at the Golden Plains Festival.
I am addicted to Local Natives’ finished studio version of Wide Eyes, the opening track of their debut album, Gorilla Manor, which dropped earlier this month. The melodic guitar patterns, discerning lyrics, heavy percussion and simplistically pretty vocal harmonies are so soothing. We Come Back and Sun Hands are also worth a listen, along with their Talking Heads’ Warning Sign cover that continues to float unknowingly around cyberspace.
Basement Jaxx’s My Turn futuristic animation
Never before have metrical nodding love bears been so cool. I’m pretty fond of Light Speed Champion, but in the end, it’s these funky, adorable, furred creatures that give Basement Jaxx’s new My Turn video clip such appeal. Get your boogie on people. You know you want to.

On the roof of Bangkok’s Banyan Tree Hotel is a dining experience like no other. The Vertigo Bar sits sixty one floors up, and serves delicious gourmet meals and cocktails. These are expensive by Thai standards, but cheap enough for shoestring travellers to indulge in now and then (a cocktail costs around AUD$12). I’ve spent hour after hour in the bar, drinking and smoking and taking in the amazing view. Most nights at Vertigo end the same, with fast-moving storm clouds rolling in without fail at about eleven pm. While wait staff scurry to move tables, and drunken diners navigate the steep stairs down to the safety of the hotel, the more hardy can sit and watch the clouds race closer and closer towards the building, soaking in both the atmosphere and the rainwater until the lightning gets too close for comfort.
Oh boy, this is fun. Omaha’s Tilly and the Wall are kitsch-cool-camp-vauderville meets pop-folk-flamenco, with a tap dancer for a drummer and some serious, serious charisma for a calling card.

I love Brooklyn band Durty Nanas. They were formed in 2005 and play street spaces, galleries, lofts, and block parties. So I guess they are the ‘real’ Bloc party.
