Random collaborations always come as a pleasant surprise. This time New York-based graffiti artist KAWS (aka Brian Donnelly) has joined forces with lavish beauty product manufacturer, Kiehl’s, in a bid to raise money for non-profit art initiative RxArt. KAWS’ design adorns an exclusive line of Kiehl’s skin moisturizers, with all proceeds benefiting RxArt’s mission to install art pieces in US hospitals.

Bonnie Durham’s long necked artwork
I’m loving New York painter Bonnie Durham’s new work. Evoking the long-necked beauties of Mannerists and the highly stylized work of the Surrealists, Durham seems also to have tapped into a strange cross between J.J. Audubon’s spirit and the ghost of an 80s era gutter-punk (think gorgeous birds and drip-painting). Just coming down from the high of yet another solo show, Bonnie is currently gearing up for an inaugural group show next month at the Six by Six Gallery in Manhattan.

I don’t know about you, but I struggle with misplacing my little SanDisk USB stick. That’s why I think Rene Lee’s Metro Flash Drive is one of the savviest, aesthetically pleasing pieces of digital stationary designed this year. Mattel’s Barbie crew teamed up with the Young Money rapper to bring her Barbie persona to life in the name of charity. Think classic highlighter pink hair with a blunt cut, flamboyant makeup and Minaj’s signature Barbie necklace. All proceed of the doll’s auction will benefit Project Angel Food, an organisation that works to provide food for people affected by HIV and AIDS.

This interview with James Lavelle gives a fascinating window into the making of the latest UNKLE opus, End Titles, Stories for Film.
This organic form, revealing itself from the sprawling metropolis of Barcelona via the marauding eye of Google, is the Santa Caterina Market. Designed by the late architect Enric Miralles it has a floating ceramic roof that drapes the bustling market below in a parental way. The coloured ceramics, of course, represent the smorgasbord of fruit and vegetables on sale within and enable a majestic view, not only for Google, but also to its immediate neighbours overlooking the site.
Remember how the forgotten (and the forbidden) places attracted you as a child? Well, I think I never got past that phase. I haven’t had the courage to do any big scale explorations yet, but while I’m planning for it, Forbidden Places is a good place to see what other people are finding in hidden places around the globe. Silver Summit make the sort of hazy psych-folk that would suit a long, night-time drive through the badlands. Incorporating an array of acoustic instruments, strings, slide guitar, and haunting female vocals into gossamer melodies, the collective sound like they hail from a dusty town on the Great Plains rather than their native Brooklyn.
