I can’t quite explain it, but when I see really amazing photography, I hear a low rumbling in the back of my head sort of like a lot of the atmospheric sounds in Blue Velvet or sometimes a white noise like a distant ocean. The images of Croatian photographer Snjezana Josipovic certainly make me hear those sounds.

Forget everything you know about death metal. Forget there’s even a genre called death metal. Brisbane-based quintet Portal just made it completely irrelevant with their latest album, Swarth. Their avalanche of muddy, raspy, blown-out noise sounds like a thousand Roman torture devices used at once in a cave during an earthquake — sawing, crunching, growling, clanging, and evoking pretty much every bad thought you’ve ever had, every moment of agony. No clear riffs. No blast beats. Just unbridled, yet murderously and coldly precise mayhem. These guys are not to be messed with. There is no more bar to be set. It’s over. It’s done.

I found this great animated short by Royal College of Art graduate John Kelly on zefrank.com. It has a great retro quality about it, like weird little cartoons I used to see as a kid on PBS. It’s also infuriatingly true to life.

New York-based, Australian art director Deanne Cheuk — an occasional contributor to Lost At E Minor — is one of the most adventurous and creative designers around. Her work on Tokion magazine, in particular, for which she shaped the visual direction over several years, was inspiring, pushing the boundaries by incorporating illustration, offbeat color touches and avoiding the straight portrait shots which seem to dominate the front window of every inner-city newsagency.
Last night, I caught Pagan Fest at B.B. Kings in NYC. I missed the band that I was the most excited to see, T˘r, but Turisas and Ensiferum more than made up for it. Americans have been pretty late to warm up to folk and Viking metal, and bands of this sort almost never tour the States, so it was gratifying to see that the show was sold out, and that the crowd was so exuberant. Listening to Mum’s fourth album — Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy — for the first time, I was awash with sentimentalism. Amidst carnival trumpets and burlesque beats, there’s a sense of this being a bohemian rhapsody. Perhaps it’s the mix of cello and brass with experimental electronica. Or maybe it’s just the soft vocals that cascade over playful, imaginative sounds. Whatever it is, it’s totally brilliant. [see also Sigur Ros' Heima]

When I did the Master Cleanse diet a few years ago — the one where you consume nothing but lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper for ten days — I sat at work looking at pictures of food as if they were porn. Scanwiches would have gotten me hot and bothered like nothing else.

Scanners’ new single Salvation
I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
Good thing Kris Kuksi channelled the trauma of growing up with an alcoholic stepfather, his disdain for ‘the typical American life and pop culture’, and his fascination with the macabre into obsessive, baroque assemblages, paintings, and drawings. Read more
