Firefly Farms
Working the farmers markets in the Baltimore-DC area the past few months, I have encountered a lot of great local food producers. One of my favorites is Firefly Farms in Garrett County, Maryland. Founded by partners Mike Koch and Pablo Solanet, the farm specializes in artisan goat cheese produced from milk sourced from local Amish farmers. I’ve often joked that Firefly is the Dogfish Head of goat cheese as they are all about experimentation and big, bold flavors (their incredible Black & Blue cheese, for instance, which has extra blue cheese culture for an extra kick). They produce milder cheese such as their Allegheny Chevre, as well as deep, ripe, sophisticated ones such as the Buche Noir. You can judge the quality of their product just by how enthusiastic the sellers at their stalls are, as well as the crowds gathered around for samples. Their Bela Vita, an Italian-style, semi-hard cheese, is one of the best cheeses I have ever tasted. I never return home from the market without something from them.

With nothing more than a floor tom and a microphone, Wham City personality Ed Schrader pounds out the punkest noise I’ve seen in a while. All he does is shout repetitive, absurdist lyrics over tribal beats as he encourages the crowd to should along. It’s cathartic, entertaining, and primal. The Baltimore-based one-man act also hosts a monthly variety show.

Ourself Beside Me is the band formed by Yang Fan, formerly of all-girl garage punk band Hang On the Box. Beginning as a minimalist, jangly, indie-punk outfit several years ago, the Beijing-based trio has evolved into a more psychedelic, expansive, and experimental project. Its self-titled debut album (produced by P.K.14’s Yang Haisong) shows influences as wide-ranging as Syd Barrett, Can, Talking Heads, and spaced-out contemporary acts from the West — ducktails and Wet Hair come to mind. Yet another diamond in the rough of Beijing rock. Look for them next year at SXSW.
Aimee van Drimmelen’s drumskin paintings
Montreal-based illustrator Aimee van Drimmelen has been collecting used drumskins from local musicians and painting on them. The results are beautiful and for sale (along with her other work) through her etsy store. Read more
Designer Kieran Ionescu apprenticed in Hungary under a master cobbler and has returned to the States to ply his trade in Durham, North Carolina. His company, BlackArm Bespoke, specializes in custom, handmade shoes that he makes himself using the traditional methods he learned abroad. It’s good to see yet another up-and-coming craftsman keeping old trades alive.

Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’
The latest band to make LA proud is tropical-nu wave act Abe Vigoda. These guys are so new and so exciting that even your grandparents don’t know who they are. Yet! They describe themselves as tropical punk, but I like to think of them as nihilistic rockers — no form, no shape, just chaos. If LA’s new breed of punk popstars such as Health, Meiko Meiko and Pocohauntas make you tremble, then this band are sure to get you very worked up.

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
