by California-based drums-bass-piano trio Topaz Rags may or may not have tumbled out of a desert roadhouse, but their sound evokes the kind of gleefully sinister goings-on you might imagine beneath thrumming bug zappers and a flickering neon glow after the bartender has locked the front door and Bubba has donned his purple cloak.

Water tank transformed into 360° kinetic art
Sofia Lacin and Hennessy Christophel recently completed Same Sun, the hand-painted, abstract mural and kinetic shadow installation on a five-story, 14,000-sf water tank in California. One third of the five month project was hand-held brushwork, done solely by the two artists. The artwork has a unique kinetic element whereby the installation interacts with the sun through shadows that move across the tank and complete the phrase, The Sun Shines Upon Us All, creating an interesting connection between time and place. Beach 2011: the joys of a first time sea change
Do you remember the first time you went to the beach? This is three year-old Nicole’s first time ever playing at the beach. I don’t remember my first time in the sand or water, but I can only hope that I had this much fun! On a technical note, this was shot entirely on the GoPro camera.

The Los Angeles musician, Ariana Delawari — aka Lion of Panjshir — is half Afghan and half Sicilian and makes wonderfully enlightened weirdo folk rock. I hope she takes that as a compliment! Her music is delicate and powerful and she is a pure artist. Everything she does has that magic light in it. She made her new album partially in Afghanistan, and many of the lyrics deal with the continued oppression of people’s liberties by the Taliban.
