Cook. Eat. Drink. Live in New York City
Hmmm, hmmm. I’m heading along to Cook Eat Drink Live in New York this weekend to indulge in a three-day modern food and wine event at The Tunnel and La Venue, at which there will be a sampling of ‘ultra-premium gourmet foods and spirits, plus appearances from some of the city’s premier chefs’. It’s going to be an event of gastronomical indulgence, so I’ll be fasting for at least, errr, three hours in anticipation.

Victorian Photocollage exhibition at the Met
Anyone who has seen my art knows about how endlessly inspired I am by macabre, Victorian art, and writing. Well, pass the smelling salts as the recently-opened Victorian Photocollage exhibition at the Met in New York makes me swoon. 48 works from 1850-1860 combine animal heads with human bodies (my favorites), or depict fantastical landscapes and other curiosities. Made primarily by aristocratic women to be shared amongst friends, the photocollages shed a unique perspective on how even the stuffiest members of society are able to express their creativity.
Endless Endless Endless play New York
Kimberly Dawn Recordings, an artist-run micro-label out of Tennessee, designed the artwork for an EP off Endless Endless Endless’ self-released album, Black Talisman. For just $4, you get to own a numbered CDR (edition of fifty hand-stamped, with an attached laser etched talisman) and listen to the dreamy, ‘post-noise’ music comprised of guitars, vocals, and a Gameboy. Saelee Oh at New York’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery
Californian artist Saelee Oh believes everything in the universe is connected, so it’s only natural that this conviction would be the central theme to her current solo-exhibit Infinite Roots. Her stunning work often depicts a harmonious world full of energy. Whimsical narratives are told by horses, octopus and also through female figures. Infinite Roots features multi-medium pieces including paintings, drawings and hand-cut paper. The intricate detail involved with her floral creations astounds me. Catch the exhibit at New York’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery until February 13. Read more

Wow! I’ve just realised that I’ve never posted the work of Swedish illustrator Kirsten Ulve before. And that’s just wrong. Her work is exceptional, a colourful, textural realm where anything seems possible. I interviewed her once for a magazine I was editing and asked her what, outside of drawing, she did better than anyone else. Her answer? ‘I bake very tasty brownies’. For real! More please.
The people on Unhappy Hipsters sure do look lonely in their beautifully designed habitats, but I’m even more confused by what people mean when they use the term ‘hipster‘ — do hipsters wear sandals and khaki shorts? I’m not sure hipsters can even afford Dwell-worthy homes, let alone maintain their minimalist decor. Read more
The duo of Brendan Monroe and Evah Fan are one of those creative, powerhouse couples. Though two entirely individual artists, the influence they exert upon one another is subtle yet undeniable. Both create the kind of art that that makes you giddy with pleasure, while the lack of pretension puts you completely at ease. You get the undeniable sense that these are two people who simply live and breathe creativity and love every moment of it. Don’t be afraid of the word retro. It has haunted us all from time to time, but one group that has embraced it with open arms is UK duo, La Roux. Their music is synth pop in the vein of Calvin Harris, Human League, The Eurythmics, and The Knife. There are quite a few of these young and ambitious pop starlets on the scene including Goldielocks. But La Roux takes the cake. Literally. I’m obsessed with their song In For the Kill and have a feeling summer will take it and make it a hit.
One of the largest contemporary construction projects in the world [it's the size of London's Hyde Park], the 220 suite Hydropolis, situated twenty metres below the surface of the Persian Gulf near Dubai, will be the first luxury underwater hotel. Having originally sprung from the Shaky Isles (otherwise known as New Zealand), I can appreciate the humour in the New Zealand cartoon series, Bro Town, the first homegrown animated series to screen during local prime time. It’s simply brilliant, a real play on the ‘thuck’ accent and small town ways of our Kiwi brethren.
