Powerage, Aussie teenage rockers tear it up

Ok, so the leadsinger of this Australian band, Powerage, is barely into his teens, and already he sings like Axl Rose and Brian Johnson’s love child. Perhaps he is? They are unbelievably good, and will rip it up on stage for many years to come. For those about to rock, Powerage salutes you.

Firekites, from small town Australia (Newcastle to be exact), are my new musical obsession, and have been since early yesterday when their song Autumn Story randomly burst into my headphones and latched itself deep into my inner ear iPod. I wish they’d been around when I last lived in Sydney; it would have been well worth the two hour drive north to see them play. The whole album (The Bowery) is beautiful, but this song especially rings out with poignancy. I love the subtle sound of the fingers sliding across the guitar frets, the gently whispered vocals, which hint at secrets and cheeky serenades, and the sense of soulful introspection that tangles itself elegantly amongst its minor chord tapestry.

Look Hear is a free event taking place at the Newcastle Art Gallery in Australia from March 10, and running until the end of the month, at which a selection of designers and artists will present a series of talks about their creative process, methods and techniques, as well as discuss the inspirations behind their creative careers. We checked in with Aussie band, The Black Ryder, and asked them whether their new album, Buy The Ticket, Take the Ride, was a labour of love or if it fell into place really quickly. Aimee Nash, one half of the duo, replied that ‘it was definitely a labour of love considering we wrote, recorded and produced the entire album ourselves. Some songs were easier than others, and some took over a year to complete. Scott engineered the album yet we produced everything together so there were many tireless hours spent at the studio desk’. Said Scott Von Ryper, the other half of the group: ‘Most of it fell into place really quickly and then took over a year to refine it all. Some songs were written and recorded in a night, and then we just kept layering and tuning it until it sounded the way we dreamed it should be. We got told many times that early versions we were playing to people sounded ‘finished’, but we couldn’t help ourselves. Blippy: tracking real time online spending
The idea behind Blippy is to use the public blackboard that is the burgeoning social media environment to monitor what your friends, and their friends, are spending their hard-earned money on. The Twitter-based platform encourages its members to upload their credit card details so that their online purchases are displayed in real time for all the world — or at least a voyeuristic few — to see.

Artist Taylor McKimens does paintings you want to poke with a stick, and maybe even sniff, if your friends dared you. With grotesque images of diseased bodies, rotting piles of vomit, intestine-looking tubes, and all manner of scatological subjects rendered in muted pastels, McKimens’ paintings look as if pop culture has been left out of the fridge too long and is sprouting some pretty funky stuff. Colorful is certainly the word when talking about the work of UK artist Simon Wild. It’s hard to be in anything but an upbeat mood after staring at all the swirling colors and bright shapes for even a minute or so.
Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more

Scanners’ new single Salvation
I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
