Essential Artists: 1800 Tequila
From straightforward and colorful, to complex and ominous, 1800 Tequila’s bottles are sporting a new look — for a limited time, at least. The recently released creative, vibrant illustrations adorning the glass bottles are part of 1800 Tequila’s second annual Essential Artists collection. Inspired by art and the want to support emerging talent, this now yearly contest challenges users to create designs for the company’s tequila-filled bottles.
From 15,000 submissions, eleven proposals from talented artists and graphic designers from New York to Hawaii were selected. Their original artwork is a mix of artistic emotions and themes, but all are innovative and unique. In addition to the eleven artists there is also a ‘celebrity’ design courtesy of Studio Number One — Shepard Fairey’s creative agency — which is bursting with a rising group of star designers. And though the contest is over, if you think you can do better than the twelve showcased talents, give it a go by designing your own masterpiece bottle directly on 1800 Tequila’s website.

Art gallery meets bistro at Miami’s Wynwood Kitchen & Bar
Miami’s up-and-coming arts district got a little bit cooler last year with the opening of Wynwood Kitchen & Bar, an art gallery-meets-bistro-meets-watering hole that has Miami hipsters swooning. Lost At E Minor contributor, and renowned street artist Shepard Fairey, has launched his first new limited edition vinyl figure in eleven years — Mr Spray — based on one of his 2004 street art creations which, in turn, was a spoof on the ‘advertising character design of the 1950s’.

These fascinating mosaics of twenty-first century human habitation are proof that planned housing isn’t always dull and distasteful, for the bird’s-eye photographer at least. What may be endless rows of generic streets and blocks at ground level suddenly become giant patchwork quilts from the air, perhaps in a weird way proving that there is more to life than what meets the pedestrian’s eye. Michael Wolf, a German born American photographer, has lived in Hong Kong since 1995. His work explores the ways city-dwellers in China and Hong Kong shape their surroundings in an ‘organic metropolis’. His series — Architecture of Density — has some breathtaking images of Hong Kong’s apartment buildings.
I’ve yet to find out what they put in the water in Germany that generates such a consistently rich stream of good electronica. Carrying the torch at the moment is Hendrik Weber, aka Pantha du Prince, whose early 2007 release, This Bliss, landed on my doormat with a deep bass-kick and hasn’t left my iPod since. Read more
Alkemie Jewelry, the brainchild of husband-and-wife team Ashley Lowengrub and Dara Gerson, is a Los-Angeles based company who make socially responsible pieces of jewelry. Their entire collection is made from 100 percent recast metal in the USA. When leather is used, Alkemie obtains the leather from cattle ranches that uses all of the animal, and are dyed with eco-friendly dyes. The current collection for Alkemie is named The Maiden Voyage, inspired by the Art Noveau Movement.
