Michel Bras’ Aubrac restaurant
Michel Bras is one of the world’s best chefs and his renowned restaurant in the Aubrac region of France continues to top must-visit lists for any gastronome. The food is stellar – unreal even – drawing heavily on Bras’ obsession with the region and the local, humble ingredients it produces.
For years, his capacity to create gorgeous, simple, pure food — based on complex methods — has been gaining as much attention as the space that houses his restaurant and accompanying hotel. The dramatic, postmodern glass structure — often compared to a spaceship — boasts sweeping views of green, rolling hills and is built into the earth in a way that allows visitors to uniquely appreciate and relish in the area’s rural, natural beauty. Between the splendor of the land and the brilliance of the chef, the experience is well worth the trip, not to mention the hefty price.

This one in Kemi, northern Finland, is the world’s largest snow castle, standing seventeen metres high and with walls that are 1,100 metres long. It has restaurants, an art gallery, a hotel and a chapel. In fact, since opening in the early 1990s, it’s been quite a hit for tourists to get married at the snow chapel. I am really into Hong Kong action flicks from the 1980s and 90s. When I first moved to New York, there were a handful of curious friends who were also interested in watching movies such as City on Fire by Ringo Lam, which Reservoir Dogs was based on. How did they find videos like thus? At the legendary Kim’s Video in New York City. These days, City on Fire can be find online, and Kim’s is history. But all the videos that entertained the film geeks of this city for more than twenty years have found a new home in, wait for it, Salemi, Sicily. Yes, the southern island of Italy. Kim has recently relocated there, as this sad but heartwarming story about him in yesterday’s New York Times reveals.
There was a time, many moons ago, when I would only listen to bands off New Zealand’s Flying Nun label. Yup, I would strap myself into a comfy chair, put my headphones on and, armed with a chunk of chocolate coated Peanut Slab and a can of L&P, soak up album after album of wonderfully self-indulgent low-fi melancholy. NASA has released some pretty amazing audio recordings of sounds from the moons of Saturn. The weirdest thing about them is that they actually sound like Theremin warbles and echoey whooshy sounds from ‘50s movies about space.
