Robyn Sweaney at Sydney’s Iain Dawson Gallery
Says curator and gallery owner Iain Dawson of Australian artist Robin Sweaney’s work: ‘I first saw Robyn Sweaney’s exquisite paintings when I was invited to a curatorial panel event by the Visual Arts Network and Arts Northern Rivers in 2006. What immediately enthralled me was Robyn’s attention to detail and obsessive capturing of the scene’s she surrounds herself with. The stillness of the works and the contemplation on these uniquely Australian dwellings work strongly on many levels. Firstly the paintings and drawings are aesthetically beautiful and incredibly evocative. Secondly, I’m increasingly fascinated by the subjects of these works, these wonderful houses, soon to be lost to the collective consciousness, superseded by the McMansions of the new millenia. Robyn’s works are a link to our heritage, our collective nostalgia for a simpler, less flashy world’. Her latest series, Home Beautiful, is showing at the Iain Dawson Gallery between 10-21 November.

Make The Girl Dance’s Kill Me video clip
Parisian electro act, Make The Girl Dance, have just launched their second single, Kill Me, based around the question: ‘what would you do if you only had eight days to live? With $30,000 in their pockets, they sped their way through America, fulfilling fantasies. The result? A rock and roll road movie, trash and tender, subversive and romantic, poetic and dirty.
Back in the 1950s, in the wake of World War Two, aerosol technology took a quantum leap through the research and development efforts of Connn Chem, who ‘developed a new line of propellants based on inert gases and hydrocarbons’. This gave rise to now staple ‘inventions’ such as whipped cream and cooking sprays. Sadly, their plans for Aerosol Mashed Potatoes never saw the light of day. Shame. It would have been a blast squirting gooey spuds all over the Principal’s car.

New York and Zurich-based artist Urs Fischer’s entropic sculptures and installations blows apart people’s expectations of what to expect at a gallery. Last year’s installation, You, at Gavin Brown was a 38-foot-by-30-foot crater dug into the gallery floor. His huge, ambitious works seem frantic and impulsive despite the immense planning and meticulous execution they often require. His mockery of physics, and the enormous scale and shock-and-awe quality of his work suggest the god-like potency of an artist, at least within a gallery space. Read more

Back in the ’90s, just as the gangsta rap phenomenon was winding down and hip-hop was fragmenting into its own subgenres, Prince Paul and RZA kicked off the short-lived horrorcore fad with their group Gravediggaz. At the time, the melding of dark, gothic themes with hardboiled rap seemed gimmicky and awkward, a strange extension of the early and awful attempts to bridge hip-hop and metal, but on closer listen, the now defunct supergroup was way more innovative than they were given credit for. Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious.
