Emily Noelle Lambert

Acrylic paints are made of plastic, but Emily Noelle Lambert achieves a fluid, organic, timeless feel with her large-scale paintings. The New York-based artist draws from her own psychic narratives to guide her brush, resulting in repeated imagery and shapes that take on weight with each iteration. Read more

KAWS creme de corps

Random collaborations always come as a pleasant surprise. This time New York-based graffiti artist KAWS (aka Brian Donnelly) has joined forces with lavish beauty product manufacturer, Kiehl’s, in a bid to raise money for non-profit art initiative RxArt. KAWS’ design adorns an exclusive line of Kiehl’s skin moisturizers, with all proceeds benefiting RxArt’s mission to install art pieces in US hospitals.

Cook. Eat. Drink. Live in New York City

Hmmm, hmmm. I’m heading along to Cook Eat Drink Live in New York this weekend to indulge in a three-day modern food and wine event at The Tunnel and La Venue, at which there will be a sampling of ‘ultra-premium gourmet foods and spirits, plus appearances from some of the city’s premier chefs’. It’s going to be an event of gastronomical indulgence, so I’ll be fasting for at least, errr, three hours in anticipation.

Shag Brooklyn (metaphorically speaking)

Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has plenty of music, art, gentrification, and hipsters, but it was missing one thing: a sex shop! I can’t wait to swing by the opening of Shag on November 20, for live music, art, and, yes, body painting! You just can’t beat sex in the city.

Krewe de Soul Masquerade Ball charity event

Do you live in the New York area and wonder what you’ll be doing Thursday, October 29th? How about you get your Halloween-prepped-dancing-ass to the Bell House for the Krewe de Soul Masquerade Ball to check out musical acts such as The High and Mighty Brass Band, Mighty Fine, and Tunde Adebimpe, from TV on the Radio [picture above]. Seven bands and three DJs are lined up to make you move your rump, which will be necessary to work off all of the free food you’ve consumed (get there early for the gastronomical delights). Oh, and feel good, too, knowing that proceeds from the event will benefit the Abeola House of New Orleans; a non-profit formed by parents whose children attended one of 200 schools and daycare centers that didn’t reopen after Hurricane Katrina.

The Uniform Project

For the Uniform Project, Sheena Matheiken is wearing one of seven identical dresses for a year as a comment on sustainable fashion. Each day, she accessorizes with vintage items, Etsy treasures, or donated hand-made goods. Sheena writes: ‘Think of it as wearing a daily uniform with enough creative license to make it look like I just crawled out of the Marquis de Sade’s boudoir’. All proceeds from the Uniform Project will go to the Akanksha Foundation’s School Project, which provides uniforms and other necessities for children living in Indian slums. I am enormously impressed! Read more

I’ve loved and admired the work of Canadian Illustrator Isabelle Arsenault as far back as I can remember. I have such a soft spot for her charmingly old fashioned French aesthetic. Read more

With literally almost half its population immigrants, Queens is the best borough for food in NYC. Between Thai food in Woodside and any ethnic food you’ve ever imagined in Jackson Heights, all foodies worth their salt make regular pilgrimages on the 7 train. If you find yourself at the end of the line in Flushing, check out Little Pepper on Roosevelt. Read more

I’m enjoying reading the insight and witticisms of the Indie Breakfast Club blog, which casts a wide net over entrepreneurship and what it means to be one and still have a conscience.

The Australian film collective behind the sci-fi spoof, The Time That Time Forgot, perfectly capture the look and feel of awkward, low-budget rip-offs from the ’70s — the psychedelic lighting, bad dubbing, and amazing hair. One almost wishes Italian Spiderman was for real. [more about Italian Spiderman]

I don’t do yoga. I have nothing against it, but it just seems a little too new agey for me. However, if I do eventually try it, I’d like the instructor to put on Fabio Orsi’s moody, ambient, drone experiments. Using piano, guitar, percussion, field recordings, and various sampled elements, Orsi creates some beautiful, meditative pieces that, while undeniably fruity, are still weird enough to hold my interest.

Celebrity PunchOut

Our celebrity-saturated culture makes many of us irrationally hateful of the faces we see on our TV screens and magazine pages. Good thing there’s Celebrity PunchOut to let off some of that steam.

The Swimmers

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.

Kris Kuksi

Good thing Kris Kuksi channelled the trauma of growing up with an alcoholic stepfather, his disdain for ‘the typical American life and pop culture’, and his fascination with the macabre into obsessive, baroque assemblages, paintings, and drawings. Read more
