Krewe de Soul Masquerade Ball charity event
Do you live in the New York area and wonder what you’ll be doing Thursday, October 29th? How about you get your Halloween-prepped-dancing-ass to the Bell House for the Krewe de Soul Masquerade Ball to check out musical acts such as The High and Mighty Brass Band, Mighty Fine, and Tunde Adebimpe, from TV on the Radio [picture above]. Seven bands and three DJs are lined up to make you move your rump, which will be necessary to work off all of the free food you’ve consumed (get there early for the gastronomical delights). Oh, and feel good, too, knowing that proceeds from the event will benefit the Abeola House of New Orleans; a non-profit formed by parents whose children attended one of 200 schools and daycare centers that didn’t reopen after Hurricane Katrina.

Diana Gilon will be artist-in-residence at MIT from October 21-28 to create Through Our Eyes, a large collaborative painting/mural with students, faculty and members of the greater MIT community. New York-based Japanese artist Shusaku Arakawa designed this small apartment block in 2005 in the Tokyo suburb of Mitaka in conjunction with his poet partner, Madeline Gins. According to the SushiLog: ‘Painted in eye-catching blue, pink, red, yellow and other bright colors, the building resembles the indoor playgrounds that attract toddlers at fast-food restaurants. Inside, each apartment features a dining room with a grainy, surfaced floor that slopes erratically, a sunken kitchen and a study with a concave floor. Electric switches are located in unexpected places on the walls so you have to feel around for the right one. A glass door to the veranda is so small you have to bend to crawl out’. Read more
One of my favourite curated art blogs is Booooooom! The site is based in my backyard of Vancouver and features a wide variety of different visual artforms, whether its paintings, photography, design work, and sometimes even videos. I find that I’m always inspired when I visit this site. I think Jeff, the site’s creator and curator, and I have really similar tastes.
Anyone who thinks black metal is too rigid and narrow a genre to have room for innovation would do well to check out Lifelover, a Swedish band that defies every convention of black metal while still remaining miraculously kvlt. The sextet wafts between languid, hallucinatory grooves that channel Iggy Pop and latter-day Cure to unhinged freak-outs that sound as if they’re emanating from the deepest, coldest forests of Norway.
Cuffs are pretty glam right now and I’m particularly feeling those by Leethal Fashion Accessories. They also have a huge range of stylish jewellery such as bangles, rings, brooches, and earrings, all for less than $50.
