Whoop Dee Doo this Halloween in Kansas City
Whoop Dee Doo is a performance art group based out of Kansas City, Missouri, and hosted by Jaimie Warren and Matt Roche, alongside fifteen or so other cast and crew members. They travel internationally to put on random shows that, visually at least, remind me of a G-Rated John Waters movie. The idea of Whoop Dee Doo shows is based upon kid-friendly faux public access TV programs (they are filmed but don’t actually air) that appear highly entertaining for adults as well. Why don’t dogs like Halloween? This is the title of an article on the Urlesque website, which recently featured the craziest costumes of the canine world for Halloween night. Dogs with manes, a dog being bitten by a crocodile, the All-American football player, the giraffe, the tarantula, and the shrimp are just some of the pseudo-artistic expressions that these poor animals are subjected to. Ourself Beside Me is the band formed by Yang Fan, formerly of all-girl garage punk band Hang On the Box. Beginning as a minimalist, jangly, indie-punk outfit several years ago, the Beijing-based trio has evolved into a more psychedelic, expansive, and experimental project. Its self-titled debut album (produced by P.K.14’s Yang Haisong) shows influences as wide-ranging as Syd Barrett, Can, Talking Heads, and spaced-out contemporary acts from the West — ducktails and Wet Hair come to mind. Yet another diamond in the rough of Beijing rock. Look for them next year at SXSW.
Aimee van Drimmelen’s drumskin paintings
Montreal-based illustrator Aimee van Drimmelen has been collecting used drumskins from local musicians and painting on them. The results are beautiful and for sale (along with her other work) through her etsy store. Read more
Designer Kieran Ionescu apprenticed in Hungary under a master cobbler and has returned to the States to ply his trade in Durham, North Carolina. His company, BlackArm Bespoke, specializes in custom, handmade shoes that he makes himself using the traditional methods he learned abroad. It’s good to see yet another up-and-coming craftsman keeping old trades alive.

Brendan Monroe just released a gorgeous monograph though the Parklife Gallery in San Francisco. From what I can tell, this looks to be a pretty thorough, beautiful showcase of Monroe’s work to date. For those of you really looking to splurge there is in fact a special edition of his book as well. This edition comes with an individual intaglio print as well as an accordion fold book published by Monroe all enclosed in a beautiful custom made slip case as a signed and numbered edition of fifty-five.
As a non-coffee drinker, I’m not going to rant about the coffee. I’ve heard, though, that the coffee is damn good. But I am going to talk about something else: food. Oh. My. God. Sydney’s Single Origin cafe have this awesome meatloaf sandwich and a raft of sourdoughs and prosciutto and roast lamb and chevre and chunky steak pies and yogurt with compote and four-cheese toasties and baked beans and … oh! Don’t forget Karlie’s special homemade lemonade! Karlie is always in the house so you know that it doesn’t come from a can and arrives at your table with that sour tang that reminds you of the annual Royal Easter Show. Everything they serve is created ethically and organically. Add the constant grinding aroma of coffee beans wafting through the air and, well, is there any other place to be? [photo by Daniel Boud]

How can you not love a band called ¡Apeshit!? Their name says it all. I got to catch these guys tour at a warehouse in Bed-Stuy the other night as they were capping off their most recent tour, and even though there were only 20 or so people in the audience by the time they went on, their set was absolutely epic, culminating in frontman Pat Berran being hoisted up and subsequently dropped by the drunken, sweaty, and heavily tattooed crowd. If you love fast, spastic, intensely brutal punk, this band will make you crap your pants.
