Tea Seduction at the New York Food & Wine Festival
Finger sandwiches, tea and a burlesque dancer in pasties dancing with a two foot tea cup and tea bag. What more could anyone possibly want on a Sunday afternoon? I had the pleasure of attending the Food & Wine Festival’s event, Tea Seduction with Tracy Stern, recently and it was definitely a treat. Being seated, we were immediately presented with ginger scones served with the most incredible made-that-morning raspberry jam, orange marmalade and clotted cream. I can’t say I wasn’t in love with a single thing placed before me for the duration of the event. Earl Grey Tea with Sherry, delicious salmon and creme Fraiche finger sandwiches, cut out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter, and some of the most amazing Chai tea — Tracy Stern’s own Salontea Chocolate Chai Tea. Nothing beats a Sunday afternoon spent being entertained by a burlesque dancer and sipping on endless cups tea.

Despite his name, I’m guessing German illustrator Frederik Jurk must be a cool guy because his images, his limited palette and gorgeous textured line work are awesome.
I was immediately taken with the work of California artist Zack Paul. Especially the images created on various bits of driftwood and found natural objects. The most perfect backdrop to his clean, geometric images.

Peter Nalitch is Russia’s answer to Manu Chao. His video for the song Guitar is a Borat-like jab at low-budget, post-Soviet awkwardness — absurd English lyrics, Eurotrash earnestness, bad wipes, and cheap subtitles. But its tongue-in-cheekness is quite apparent, and the song is disarmingly catchy and romantic.
Melbournes laneways are cluttered with themed, designer bars. The challenge seems to be which is the most hip, funky and individual bar. Step in Section 8, an old inner city carpark furbished with warehouse pallets, patio heaters and a couple of freight containers, converted to serve you drinks. The vibe is fittingly low-key, with background music played at a reasonable level, frequently changing decor, and a variety of options to quench your thirst. It’s casual, fun and simple. Interior design website, Apartment Therapy, just posted some amazing pictures of ’70s rock stars in their parents’ homes. My favorite is of David Crosby and his dad [below]. The two look so completely opposite of each other that it’s hard to believe that it’s Crosby’s real dad. They also look like they’re barely concealing the contempt they have for each other. Crosby’s father was an Academy-Award-winning cinematographer who shot Tabu and High Noon, amongst other well-known films. Read more
The coolest band in Indonesia? I think so. White Shoes & The Couples Company describe themselves as a small band that is ‘influenced by Indonesian movie soundtracks from the 70s and inspired by the acoustic spirit of 1930′s classic jazz musicians’. But I like to think of them as carrying the torch for artists like Benny Goodman, Tahiti 80, and The Cardigans, all at the same time.

Yellow Bird Project, a Montreal-based organization, has teamed up with indie rock bands to raise money for charities. The rock bands, including big indie rockers like The National and The Shins, design their own tee-shirt and choose the charities that will benefit from the sales. In the animal series, artist/designer Okayboss explores the trend of bands naming themselves after animals. These pieces, inspired by such artists as the Mountain Goats and The Dodos, put a colorful spin on the wildlife-turned-band phenomenon in indie-rock.
