Laser beam food art
The figurative food art movement comes from sculptors and catering companies. But there is no doubt that this trade becomes professional when the artists start to use laser beams in order to modify the food. On this occasion, watermelons, onto which different figures such as tango dancers, the portrait of Van Gogh, a Chinese Turtle, or a bouquet of roses, can be superimposed.

While perusing Kinokuniya Bookstore on my lunch break, I came across the book, Face Food by Christopher D Salyers. Face Food documents very elaborate Bento boxes called Charaben in which food is made to look like anime characters, animals, plants and flowers. Everyone from Piglet to Pikachu is portrayed, with foods such as broccoli, ham, carrot, cheese, egg, imitation crab meat, and more. I’m blown away by the creativity and time (anywhere from thirty minutes to three hours) that mothers — and father, sometimes — dedicate to making these works of art for their children to take to school. If you’ve ever known the mouth-watering appeal of well photographed food, then the Eat the Art exhibition now on in Boston may be the place for you. This lip-smacking exhibit brings together a smorgasbord of food as art themed pieces from more than forty-two artists. Using various media, artists showcase everything from a miniature cocktail dress made out of the skins of clementines to flowers made of jelly beans. One of the highlights includes several of Andy Warhol’s iconic food-themed pieces. Eat the Art is on now until the month’s end. Read more
Elvis on Velvet Made with Cheese Puffs
What to say about a portrait of Elvis on velvet made only with neon orange cheese puff crumbs and residue? This video from Eclectic Asylum is as intriguing as it is borderline revolting, though admittedly the end product is impressive. If that’s not enough, Eclectic Asylum has put out other videos where food is used to create odd portraits and paintings. Check out the Redneck Art made with barbecue ribs, or the vegemite on toast portrait. Despite the instinct to look away, it’s all very addictive.

The latest innovation in the world of the puppet toys are the unsettling dolls of celebrities that are manufactured by the German company Puppenklinik. The most outstanding are the Dalai Lama, the Pope Benedictus, Obama, Angela Merkel and Lady Di. The website offers different articles, where the proud creator shows his works, and a complete shop where special attention is given to the buyers of Barack Obama, which is — understandably — a hot item. Aurel Schmidt’s intricate drawings make me want to start a band just so I can use it as album art. The DIY-outsider tack many artists have taken of late has produced some art that makes you think ‘I could do that’, but Schmidt’s work is inimitable — her rendering of hair must make other artists furious with envy. The Suit Up exhibition comprises a number of artworks from various Australian street, comic, and illustration artists, each of whom has applied their unique style to that ubiquitous — yet, rarely tapped — canvas, the playing card. The designs have been produced as giclee prints, signed and numbered by the artists, and are limited to 10 prints of each design. Real-size decks of cards have also been produced for sale. The Suit Up crew is a close-knit group of predominantly Melbourne-based artists who are passionate about Australia’s ‘low-brow’ art scene, which is more collaborative and less ego-driven than much of the the high-brow art world. The exhibition runs between February 13 and 25.
I’m not much of a jewelry guy, but if bling is in order, it’s ordered from my man Osa at Complete Technique. Originally from Japan, Osa is now based in Dumbo, Brooklyn and makes the finest metal jewelry, on par with any of his ancestor’s samurai swords. From speaker rings to turntable pendants, it’s all fresh and mostly music or hip-hop related. He’s been at it for about ten years and works harder than most people I know. If you need some jewelry, show him some love.

No one disputes that the Bush Administration is no friend to civil liberties, but this little spot on the ACLU website smacks of paranoia. At least it’s entertaining, and some people might actually welcome the ultra-convenient vision of the future this piece of propaganda offers.
Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’
