The Sea Monkey revival
‘Just add water and let the fun come up’. Sea Monkeys are here and we don’t know what to do with them. They are graceful and funny, they have monkey tails, they are real aquatic acrobats and they are totally playful and easy to breed. The real name of the Sea Monkeys, of course, is ‘brine shrimp’.
It’s a crustacean that is used to feed fish. It was discovered by an American at the end of the 70s and he turned it into a way of earning money. Some tiny encapsulated eggs hutch out when they are in contact with salty water and they grow up quickly, becoming the amusement of every one 30 years or older who remembers nostalgically those cheap pets of the 80s. Now they’re back in a kit with Sea Monkeys, Triops Triops (similar to the original ones) and NASA Gel.

1985 Summer/Spring Argos Catalogue on Flickr
I must have seen hundreds of photo sets on Flickr, and even though this one doesn’t contain the original work, I’d struggle to find one that evokes such nostalgia. Many an hour was spent searching the Argos catalogue for the latest toys, walkmans, hi-fis and the like. Now we can do it all again. Read more
Crazy funny 1987 aerobic dance competition
1980s, why did you fade away. I miss you and your rampant kitschiness. Life is just too damn serious these days. I could do with a sprinkle of fun back on our TV screens. Did I say fun? Oh boy! Watch on and be amazed. Sorry, amused.

Knight Rider KITT Super Pursuit Mode Minimates Vehicle
Like many other kids who grew up in the 80s, I loved Knight Rider. I wish this Minimates toy version of KITT in super pursuit mode was available back then.

Rinkya survival gear for cats and dogs
It is known that the Japanese are very passionate about robotic pets, but now they’re also orried about their real pets in case of an earthquake. The new Rinkya survival gear for cats and dogs is not only a shiny vest for Lassie, but is also flame resistant. It includes small bags with water and cookies for your beloved pet to have something to chew while you run away from the disaster area. But that’s not all. The survival gear also includes a set of aromatherapy oils to help your pet to relax during a disaster. It costs 38,000 yen (approximately 375 dollars) via Rinkya Stores.

Clocky is an alarm clock that notices if you don’t wake up and starts moving all over your bedroom so you won’t be able to catch it and turn the alarm off. Its main intention is to hide and keep ringing untl you wake up. This tinny alarm clock has two all-terrain wheels that can endure all surfaces.
Only in Japan? Perhaps. The Japanese Bug Fights website promotes real bug fights, with combatants such as scorpions, spiders, mantis and giant beetles. The rules are simple: only two bugs must be engaged in the fight. External weapons are not allowed and the fight lasts till one of opponents dies. Hmmm. Read more

According to B.R. Meyers over at The Atlantic, there is a scourge of foodies looming over America. Foodies are bad because they fly to Vietnam for pho. All of them do, which is evil. But even if they stopped doing that, Meyers would still be mad because he hates that people enjoy food at all. Anthony Bourdain is the devil for encouraging people to love cooking, Michael Pollan is evil for making the elitist claim that fast food is bad for us. Read more
This entertaining documentary follows a group of seemingly clichéd American teenagers in their last year of high school. Through a comprehensive recording of their lives it reminds us that, when examining anything in detail, there is no such thing as a cliché. The naivety and hope of each student shines through, providing a memorable and accurate portrait of a middle-American high school. Read more

Silver Summit make the sort of hazy psych-folk that would suit a long, night-time drive through the badlands. Incorporating an array of acoustic instruments, strings, slide guitar, and haunting female vocals into gossamer melodies, the collective sound like they hail from a dusty town on the Great Plains rather than their native Brooklyn.

Derrick R. Cruz has channeled his talent for creating densely detailed works into the creation of the brand Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons. Fuelled by the New York city art and fashion scene, Cruz’s pieces are timeless but relevant, and beautifully detailed in their imperfections. They combine gold, silver, resin and bronze to create dark but wearable art.
