In Japan, like in other countries of the world, more people are living alone. So experts on commercialization have created products to satisfy a new demand. One of the most recognised products is the man arm-shaped pillow. It’s an arm that doesn’t include a body, so — for better or for worse — it lacks snores, nasty smells, and human warmth.
Following the completion of his studies at the Mulhouse School of Art and the School of Decorative Arts of Strasbourg, Michel Gantner became the artistic director of an advertising agency. During 1998 he dedicated himself exclusively to photography, working with Nina Ricci, Kenzo, Cartier, Caron, Hermes, Annayake, and Air France. His nature photography, an area he has worked on for more than a decade, has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, advertising campaigns and publications around the world notably in Japan. The Nobody Was Thirsty project is a collaboration between Ivan Kane’s Café W as charity — water — and Australia’s own denim label, Nobody. The campaign aims to sell a signature, not-for-profit T-shirt, with all donations helping to fund the world’s water crisis. Jean-Julien Pous’ Seeking You is an animated love letter to the city of Hong Kong. It presses all the same buttons as Blade Runner and In the Mood for Love, with a touch of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s gothic style, and though it’s really amazing eye candy, it also smacks of creepy, orientalist expat. Here, an entire Asian city is exoticized, fetishized, and finally anthropomorphized in a rather unsubtle way. Why are so many creepy old European dudes so lecherous when it comes to Asia?
Having originally sprung from the Shaky Isles (otherwise known as New Zealand), I can appreciate the humour in the New Zealand cartoon series, Bro Town, the first homegrown animated series to screen during local prime time. It’s simply brilliant, a real play on the ‘thuck’ accent and small town ways of our Kiwi brethren.
