Hillman Curtis meets Lawrence Weiner

Hillman Curtis is one of those people who can at times be a little hard to pin down: he’s been at different stages of his career a designer, musician, author and film-maker. I find his independent, online, D.I.Y approach to film-making a refreshing contrast to the stock standard methods found in the film industry. His series of short documentaries on artists, named the Artist Series, can have a tendency to romanticise successful veteran artists and designers by presenting them as wise and all-knowing — but that’s because the films focus on thoughtful individuals who discuss matters that steer well clear of banality. I particularly like this one about conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner, which was made in collaboration with Debbie Millman.

New York-based, Australian art director Deanne Cheuk — an occasional contributor to Lost At E Minor — is one of the most adventurous and creative designers around. Her work on Tokion magazine, in particular, for which she shaped the visual direction over several years, was inspiring, pushing the boundaries by incorporating illustration, offbeat color touches and avoiding the straight portrait shots which seem to dominate the front window of every inner-city newsagency.

When Big Brother means nothing more than a new low in television standards, the warnings of Orwell’s classic 1984 are more poignant than ever. Miniluv — or The Ministry of Love in Oldspeak — is where Winston was brutally tortured, brain-washed and ultimately learned to love Big Brother. And no, he wasn’t watching TV. Wear your highbrow literary tastes with pride. Created by graphic-tee fashion label the-affair and printed on soft American Apparel, this tee is available for purchase through our online store.

Beast is a new collaboration between the Montreal-based French producer, Jean-Phi Goncalves, frontman of the electro band Plaster, and singer Betty Bonifassi. Their sound inhabits a place where the cinematic grandeur of Portishead meets the immediacy of Rage Against the Machine. Bonifassi calls it ‘trip rock’, invoking the way haunting choirs and glitchy electronic bits run underneath saw-toothed bass and grinding guitars, and she may be onto something. Cloud Control have just unravelled a newly recorded track, Gold Canary, from their forthcoming 2010 album. It’s straight up pastoral Blue Mountains goodness. I actually heard it live earlier this year and it sounded quite rad.
