Prospect Park Zoo, Brooklyn
Very much neglected in the shadow of its siblings — the famous giant in the Bronx and the high profile zoo in Central Park — Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Zoo deserves much more credit than it gets. Sure, it’s small. But that just means you can see everything in a spare hour while taking a stroll in the park. And it only costs $6. I also really like that the snack bar and gift shop consist of a handful of vending machines ready to sell you a weird microwave pizza or a stuffed Meerkat.
Like the Central Park Zoo, the exhibits here are centered around an outdoor sea lion area where Californian sea lions can be seen doing their thing several times a day or just swimming laps in their off time. My favorite area is the outdoor walking trail area featuring kangaroos and wallabies, big porcupines, and one of my all time favorite animals, the red panda. The Barn Yard section is also not to be missed, and you should make sure to have some quarters on hand to feed the assorted goats and sheep. You also won’t be able to resist the pair of alpacas with Britpop hair. It should also be noted that you can kind of see some of the Barn Yard from the nearest road in the park, if you are cheap and want to make the effort.

I’ve been living in Greenpoint Brooklyn for a couple of years now and one of the highlights is brunch on the weekends. After living in Crown Heights for seven years, where your only choices are Tom’s Diner or Popeye’s Fried Chicken, it’s an amazing change of pace. Brooklyn Label is a classic, old Brooklyn style restaurant with a great menu and when you’re a regular, you get seated before the masses. It’s definitely worth the trip to Greenpoint. But beware of the long waits at around 1pm when the hipsters wake up.
The PEP Gallery [Pink Elephant projects] is a great little spot on an up-and-coming stretch near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. I especially appreciate their openness to showing a lot of illustrators and fine artists together. They always have something exciting to see, and the atmosphere is always so pleasant and welcoming.

BeamO Flying Hoop by Stuff Design Inc
Let me preface this by saying that in some circles (such as my parents’ backyard) I am known as Dr BeamO. But rest assured, I am not sponsored in any official way. Summertime at McCarren Park in Williamsburg is picturesque. It’s often filled with a mix of people, old and young, picnicking or sitting in the shade, running along the track or playing soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from). It’s also connected to a now defunct McCarren (swimming) pool which transforms into an outdoor concert space on Sundays during the summer. Gonzales’ gentle piano reworking of the beautiful Feist soliloquy, One Evening, trickles through my headphones like the sweetest sprinkle of mid-winter sunshine.
No one disputes that the Bush Administration is no friend to civil liberties, but this little spot on the ACLU website smacks of paranoia. At least it’s entertaining, and some people might actually welcome the ultra-convenient vision of the future this piece of propaganda offers.
Having originally sprung from the Shaky Isles (otherwise known as New Zealand), I can appreciate the humour in the New Zealand cartoon series, Bro Town, the first homegrown animated series to screen during local prime time. It’s simply brilliant, a real play on the ‘thuck’ accent and small town ways of our Kiwi brethren.
The Los Angeles musician, Ariana Delawari — aka Lion of Panjshir — is half Afghan and half Sicilian and makes wonderfully enlightened weirdo folk rock. I hope she takes that as a compliment! Her music is delicate and powerful and she is a pure artist. Everything she does has that magic light in it. She made her new album partially in Afghanistan, and many of the lyrics deal with the continued oppression of people’s liberties by the Taliban.
