BeamO Flying Hoop by Stuff Design Inc
Let me preface this by saying that in some circles (such as my parents’ backyard) I am known as Dr BeamO. But rest assured, I am not sponsored in any official way. The BeamO is basically a 30-inch diameter hula-hoop, wrapped in colorful spandex, and with a hole cut out of the center. It is enjoyed in much the same manner as a traditional hard Frisbee. It is best thrown two handed, and best caught by getting a head, arm, or leg inside the center hole.
For maximum enjoyment, consider a nice bit of trash talk while diving into the dirt and catching it on your ankle. If all else fails, try to keep it out of the trees. Extra care should be taken on the beach or in other high-wind scenarios because BeamO will basically just roll away forever under its own sail power.
I also really dig BeamO’s homegrown vibe. It’s made by a small company founded by inventor Kim Stuffelbeam, whose goal is to make ‘BeamO Fridays’ a part of office life similar to Casual Fridays. I’m reminded of the character Grass Valley Greg from that Mr. Show Sketch, if anyone remembers that one. Tofutti break!

We’ve been featuring some interesting guest contributors on Lost At E Minor over the past six months. Included among them are Angus Andrews, from The Liars, Ben Lee (who wrote about his festish for vintage Rolexes, amongst other things), Brendan Canning from Broken Social Scene, designer Deanne Cheuk, artist Sam Weber, singer-songwriter Laura Veirs (who brought Juana Molina to our attention), and Tegan from Tegan and Sara.
Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over. Note especially the angry dude in sunglasses at about 2:51 — apparently he thinks nothing can ever top Rent.
On the roof of Bangkok’s Banyan Tree Hotel is a dining experience like no other. The Vertigo Bar sits sixty one floors up, and serves delicious gourmet meals and cocktails. These are expensive by Thai standards, but cheap enough for shoestring travellers to indulge in now and then (a cocktail costs around AUD$12). I’ve spent hour after hour in the bar, drinking and smoking and taking in the amazing view. Most nights at Vertigo end the same, with fast-moving storm clouds rolling in without fail at about eleven pm. While wait staff scurry to move tables, and drunken diners navigate the steep stairs down to the safety of the hotel, the more hardy can sit and watch the clouds race closer and closer towards the building, soaking in both the atmosphere and the rainwater until the lightning gets too close for comfort.
