Ursula K. Le Guin’s The
Dispossessed

This woman is probably my favourite author. I have read almost everything she ever wrote and her book The
Dispossessed really challenged my thinking when I read it a couple years ago. Plus, her science fiction novel A Wizard of Earthsea was made into a movie by Studio Ghibli, which is really sick.

EXBX Tapes

EXBX Tapes is my friend Dan from Detroit. He puts out really good weirdo noise music. He hand-makes the art and assembles it himself. Everything that goes into one of his tapes feels distinct and real.

The work of director, Dario Argento

I recently watched Deep Red [above], Suspiria, and Demons. Every movie has a different feel to it, but it
is all good, which is what amazes me about Argento: the scope in style that he mastered. Detroit has a zombie walk. Zombies walk around, bands play creepy music, it rules. I like festivals, I like when people have their own festivals. I like day parties at festivals, or just about any day. It’s almost a picnic and show in one. I like small shows where your friends are at. Where people know you. Where faces are happy to see you.

Mark McGuire, Emeralds

My roommate Adam and I have been playing Mark McGuire’s album, Pocket Full of Rain, all summer and some other tapes our other roommate has showed us that he did. I really like everything this guy has done. I sit and watch him play guitar on YouTube when I’m bored.

Photographer Richard Mosse’s artistic photographs of war and humanitarian disasters addresses the viewers’ desire for rhyme and reason in the face of such atrocities. In his Quick series, Mosse documents the conflicts in Congo using infra-red film, which make his images seem magical and serenely beautiful, but reality continuously lurks in the faces of refugees and the rifles brandished by purple-uniformed soldiers. Simple, colorful and somewhat esoteric, I really dig the work of New York illustrator, Rich Tu, a new SVA graduate student. It was something else to see his finely textured images blown up to poster size and beautifully displayed at the recent SVA student show. Read more

I interviewed the mysterious Suitman some time ago for the Australian magazine, Riot. Even then it was clear that, with his immaculately pressed suit and crisp white shirts, he was an icon – both stylistically and conceptually. So it’s no surprise to hear about his latest adventure, The New Grand Tour, ‘an episodic art project featuring revolving guest artists with hyphenated cultural and geographical backgrounds. Man, I remember shaking my tail to Come on Eileen many moons ago — when rat-tails were a right of passage and Molly Ringwald held both the lock and the key to my tiny pitter pattering heart. Back then it was all ice-skating and fairy floss; skateboards and trading cards. It was bags of chips by the rusty school fence and sunburnt faces on crackling summer days. Read more

For an industry that spends so much time fratenising with musicians, few designers ever admit to being primarily influenced by the music industry itself. Electronic Poet are an exception. Read more
