EXBX Tapes is my friend Dan from Detroit. He puts out really good weirdo noise music. He hand-makes the art and assembles it himself. Everything that goes into one of his tapes feels distinct and real.

Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Dispossessed
This woman is probably my favourite author. I have read almost everything she ever wrote and her book The Dispossessed really challenged my thinking when I read it a couple years ago. Plus, her science fiction novel A Wizard of Earthsea was made into a movie by Studio Ghibli, which is really sick.

I recently watched Deep Red [above], Suspiria, and Demons. Every movie has a different feel to it, but it is all good, which is what amazes me about Argento: the scope in style that he mastered. Detroit has a zombie walk. Zombies walk around, bands play creepy music, it rules. I like festivals, I like when people have their own festivals. I like day parties at festivals, or just about any day. It’s almost a picnic and show in one. I like small shows where your friends are at. Where people know you. Where faces are happy to see you.
My roommate Adam and I have been playing Mark McGuire’s album, Pocket Full of Rain, all summer and some other tapes our other roommate has showed us that he did. I really like everything this guy has done. I sit and watch him play guitar on YouTube when I’m bored.

This gourmet paint is made by only two dedicated paint makers without fillers, just pigment and oil, like it should be. There is only one store that sells it and it is run out of the Elisabeth Foundation for the Arts building in Chelsea, New York. They have a table set up there so you can play with and mix any of the colours together to see its effects. I usually go to pick one tube up and hang around asking questions to one half of the duo, Gail, and usually leave with five tubes, having learned a lot about the history and the process behind each colour.
We spoke to Dopepope about his latest Metal Man Project: ‘In the fifth grade, I drew a comic called Metal Man about a humanoid robot that went crazy and pulled knives on people. It’s the most ridiculous thing ever. I was a kid! Anyway, I found the artwork and simply traced the head and the logo exactly as I had them and fell in love with the iconic shapes they’ve created’. Major Stars are another throwback ’70s rock band, playing Sabbath-flavored, guitar-driven psych tunes. But what sets them apart from the horde of Zeppelin-worshipping clones is vocalist Sandra Clarkson, whose voice is clean and feminine, but loud and aggressive — she doesn’t try to affect a Janis Joplin rasp. The band’s music also skews heavily towards the Acid Mothers Temple end of the ’70s revival thing rather than the Wolfmother side, another plus. Nope, rock still isn’t dead.
