Trinacria Baltimore
New Yorkers, and even Philadelphians, are spoiled with their abundance of fantastic Italian markets — Baltimoreans take what they can get. That said, Trinacria — tucked away in a weird little corner of downtown Bmore near the famed Lexington Market – is no joke.
The drab storefront belies the mountain of goodies available within this Charm City establishment – imported and domestic cheeses, homemade sausage, bread and pastries that have been baked on premises, pastas, sandwiches, espresso, and a staff-selected collection of wines all for prices anyone can afford. The place is the opposite of pretentious (no faux rustic feel or contrived ambiance), and it may not have much in the way of super fancy, ribbon-bound, artisanal imports, but what they have is very good and cheap, and the place has the welcoming feel that all great, no-bullshit delis have — Saturdays are like little community gatherings where families, construction workers, and hungover artists take numbers to be served, and staff and customers alike catch up with each other as they wait.

My roommate is on a big Star Trek kick, re-watching the entire original series. I forgot how amazing and progressive and ahead-of-its-time it was. The site is still in private beta and not currently supported on Mac, but as its collection of images expands, it’s likely to become much more widely available.

When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.

The original NY Trinacria was on 2nd Avenue somewhere in the twenties. A great deli that sold all kinds of beer (including the hard to get Swans), great heros and all kind of marvelous stuff you couldn’t get anywhere else in the city.
Great days in a great city.
