12″ 80s electropop CD giveaway
You gotta love the 80s. How can you beat the music? New romantic, new wave, new everything. It was quite an era, and we have a giveaway to prove it. The 12”80s Electro:Pop 3CD set showcases 80s music all its extended mix glory. To enter, just leave the name of your favorite 80s band and the city you live in below this post.
Featuring a mix of the classic and the underground, this set gets back to the original concept of 12”80s – a mix of seminal 80s Electro:Pop 12″s from legends such as New Order, Human League, Simple Minds, Talk Talk, Grandmaster Flash, Soft Cell, Japan, Afrika Bambaataa, The Cure, Heaven 17, Yazoo and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, manyof who have inspired today’s new wave of chart electropop from La Roux and Little Boots to Florence & the Machine and Goldfrapp.
The 33 track set features the 12” mix of Freestyle “Don’t Stop the Rock” – the rare, classic old school electro track from the eyebrow raising Cadbury’s TV ad, the Frankie Goes to Hollywood New York mix of “Relax” as featured in Virgin Atlantic’s 80s-inspired TV ad and Was (not Was) “Wheel Me Out” which sampled by Eric Prydz and Steve Angello for their 2005 hit “Woz Not Woz”.

Die Doraus und Die Marinas’ ‘Fred from Jupiter’
I was listening to WFMU the other day when I heard a quirky electro song with German lyrics. It was pretty catchy, and I think German is funny. A little Internet digging revealed that the song was Fred from Jupiter, a single from 1981 by Die Doraus und Die Marinas. Check out this great video for the track.
Retro throwbacks: classic 80s soft drinks ads
Oh man, the 80s were fun. Back then it was all beaches and smiles, lightweight soft drinks and squeaky clean advertising. Somewhere along the way, the message was corrupted, and the beach bunny actresses and guitar shredder actors of that golden era of naivety were forever tainted with the pastiche of their weird TV legacies. The renowned brand of pianos, Baldwin, launched a new line of Exoticos Products, inspired by the eccentric artistic viewpoint of pianos that were used by the master Liberace in the 70s and 80s. This collection has customizations for everybody: fluorescent reminiscences, African Savanna inspirations, a little bit of the casinos of Las Vegas, and the spirit of the American Way of Life.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. It was during the 80s when I was extremely young, and I’ve never stopped listening to this song’. Read the rest of Crimea X’s Secret Playlist.

I love the curated selection of abandoned swimming pool photos on Feature Shoot today, featuring work by Carlo Van de Roer and Albert Jodar, amongst others.

Brooklyn-based artist Jeph Gurecka uses food and organic matter in fascinating ways to make his conceptual pieces, taxidermying chicken parts and arranging them into a muscular, human torsoe, or making a huge pile of skulls made out of bread, or reproducing photos using salt, soil, and ash. As I sit writing, I can’t shake the feeling that I’m breaking an unwritten code among travellers. How do you write about a destination that’s paradise because no one knows about it? You tell the right people. So before I change my mind, here goes. Take a boat about two hours off the south coast of Cambodia, and you’ll reach a tropical hideaway called Lazy Beach on the Island of Koh Rong Saloem. Run by two English guys who’ve redefined the meaning of chillin’, it’s turquoise waters and white sands are everything you’d expect. From beachfront bungalows with snorkelling right off the beach, to a restaurant that cooks up the local fishermen’s daily catch. This is one deserted island you won’t mind being stranded on.
If on a picture perfect summer’s day, you find yourself wishing for a blizzard, something is wrong. Very wrong. But don’t panic, this weather preference has nothing to do with hatin’ on sunshine, and everything to do with an infamous leather bomber jacket from Claude Maus. It’ll have you hooked with its luxurious soft leather, stitched front paneling, Italian wool lining and the very necessary detachable hood. If you’re somewhere cold, then chances are you’re nowhere near this Australian-based label. So if you’re looking for a push in the purchase direction, it’ll be pleasing to know that the Aussie dollar ain’t doing too good. Gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘investment piece’, doesn’t it? I don’t get Flight of The Concords. I just don’t find it funny. I also don’t get most comedy these days. It’s so derivative and clichéd. Everyone wants the same laughs. I like comedy that pushes the boundaries in strange ways. Fonejack is one underground unit that have had me rolling around on the floor with their real life skits. Read more
Listening to Mum’s fourth album — Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy — for the first time, I was awash with sentimentalism. Amidst carnival trumpets and burlesque beats, there’s a sense of this being a bohemian rhapsody. Perhaps it’s the mix of cello and brass with experimental electronica. Or maybe it’s just the soft vocals that cascade over playful, imaginative sounds. Whatever it is, it’s totally brilliant. [see also Sigur Ros' Heima]
Listen to Mum’s track, The Amateur Show.
