12″ 80s electropop CD giveaway

You gotta love the 80s. How can you beat the music? New romantic, new wave, new everything. It was quite an era, and we have a giveaway to prove it. The 12”80s Electro:Pop 3CD set showcases 80s music all its extended mix glory. To enter, just leave the name of your favorite 80s band and the city you live in below this post.

Featuring a mix of the classic and the underground, this set gets back to the original concept of 12”80s – a mix of seminal 80s Electro:Pop 12″s from legends such as New Order, Human League, Simple Minds, Talk Talk, Grandmaster Flash, Soft Cell, Japan, Afrika Bambaataa, The Cure, Heaven 17, Yazoo and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, manyof who have inspired today’s new wave of chart electropop from La Roux and Little Boots to Florence & the Machine and Goldfrapp.

The 33 track set features the 12” mix of Freestyle “Don’t Stop the Rock” – the rare, classic old school electro track from the eyebrow raising Cadbury’s TV ad, the Frankie Goes to Hollywood New York mix of “Relax” as featured in Virgin Atlantic’s 80s-inspired TV ad and Was (not Was) “Wheel Me Out” which sampled by Eric Prydz and Steve Angello for their 2005 hit “Woz Not Woz”.

Die Doraus und Die Marinas’ ‘Fred from Jupiter’

I was listening to WFMU the other day when I heard a quirky electro song with German lyrics. It was pretty catchy, and I think German is funny. A little Internet digging revealed that the song was Fred from Jupiter, a single from 1981 by Die Doraus und Die Marinas. Check out this great video for the track.

1985 Summer/Spring Argos Catalogue on Flickr

I must have seen hundreds of photo sets on Flickr, and even though this one doesn’t contain the original work, I’d struggle to find one that evokes such nostalgia. Many an hour was spent searching the Argos catalogue for the latest toys, walkmans, hi-fis and the like. Now we can do it all again. Read more

Crazy funny 1987 aerobic dance competition

1980s, why did you fade away. I miss you and your rampant kitschiness. Life is just too damn serious these days. I could do with a sprinkle of fun back on our TV screens. Did I say fun? Oh boy! Watch on and be amazed. Sorry, amused.

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV

The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend

Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

One thing we’ve lost in this MP3 culture is awesome album art. A few people on Flickr have started a group where people pose with their favorite record sleeves and the results are pretty amusing.

Firekites, from small town Australia (Newcastle to be exact), are my new musical obsession, and have been since early yesterday when their song Autumn Story randomly burst into my headphones and latched itself deep into my inner ear iPod. I wish they’d been around when I last lived in Sydney; it would have been well worth the two hour drive north to see them play. The whole album (The Bowery) is beautiful, but this song especially rings out with poignancy. I love the subtle sound of the fingers sliding across the guitar frets, the gently whispered vocals, which hint at secrets and cheeky serenades, and the sense of soulful introspection that tangles itself elegantly amongst its minor chord tapestry.

It’s the final, sultry day of Barcelona’s experimental sound-fest, Sonar, and weary punters are gazing listlessly at an empty, smoke-filled stage. Before long, a vocalist, beatboxer and grand pianist stride on, and what follows is a startling and, at times, deeply melancholic cabaret-electronic hybrid, prompting jaws to drop and delighting the drowsy. Meet Khan of Finland: ‘I tell stories about my everyday life; they are songs about love, pain, party and spirituality. I would call it bionic blues’.
