by A lot of people are down on Snack Truck’s name, but I kind of dig it. In any case, the two-drummer quartet could be called Turds and they’d still rock with their proggy instrumental thrash.

Gull is the solo project of Nathaniel Rappole who also plays in Richmond-based bands Snack Truck and Ultra Dolphins. Using one hand to play guitar and the other to play drums while he sings into a telephone-receiver-rigged skull mask, Rappole’s tunes are melodic and richly layered, despite the sparse parts that make up the whole.

This gourmet paint is made by only two dedicated paint makers without fillers, just pigment and oil, like it should be. There is only one store that sells it and it is run out of the Elisabeth Foundation for the Arts building in Chelsea, New York. They have a table set up there so you can play with and mix any of the colours together to see its effects. I usually go to pick one tube up and hang around asking questions to one half of the duo, Gail, and usually leave with five tubes, having learned a lot about the history and the process behind each colour.

I haven’t been this excited by a band in a long time. Florida’s Black Kids have crept under — and now over — the radar through a demo and some serious internet buzz from NME and Pitchfork.
