Phoenix Commotion
|Work hard, I always believed, and someday I’d fulfill my very American dream of owning my own home. Alas, hefty student loans and other insane expenses tore asunder my dream of ever owning property. Until now. Twelve years ago, Dan Phillips started Phoenix Commotion, a construction company that builds low-income housing out of found and salvaged materials. Each home is one-of-a-kind, with floors built out of wine corks, and picture frame corners constructed into ceilings. The fire beneath my dream of home ownership has been newly stoked.

The Woodland Home, built by Simon Dale and his family in Wales, beyond its Shire-like qualities, is a ‘low impact’ home designed to have minimal affects on the environment. Using straw-bale construction along with various other sustainable techniques using natural and renewable materials, Dale built his house set into a hill for a low visual profile and a decreased need for artificial heating and cooling. The house is fitted with such amenities as a compost toilet and a refrigerator cooled via air coming from the foundation. The Dale family has now begun work on a new home and is dedicated to teaching other people how to live as off-the-grid and as close to the land as possible.

Diana Gilon creates a collaborative painting at MIT
Diana Gilon will be artist-in-residence at MIT from October 21-28 to create Through Our Eyes, a large collaborative painting/mural with students, faculty and members of the greater MIT community. The painting, the first of many that will be executed at schools along the East Coast to promote peace, will highlight themes of coexistence and interfaith collaboration and will represent the common goal of a peaceful future for all communities that struggle with conflict in such places as Israel, Palestine and beyond.
