Hand-drawn story of Stuart Sutcliff and Astrid Kirchherr

The woman John Lennon could never get. That’s Astrid Kirchherr. The man who could? Stuart Sutcliff, the fifth Beatle. What story is more interesting than the rise of the Fab Four? The story of the Fab Fifth: Stu and his lover Astrid. Germany 1960. She’s a photographer, he’s an artist and bassist in the soon-to-be biggest band in the world. Read more

Jim Carrey covers I Am The Walrus by The Beatles

Jim Carrey is a master jokes man. I have loved him ever since I saw The Mask in the cinemas many years ago. I have also loved The Beatles since before I was born, when my dad would play them over and over. So what would happen if those two things combined: Jim Carrey in his comedic mastery and The Beatles’ brilliant song I Am the Walrus? Your head would explode, right? Pretty much.

Beatles Magnetic Hair Game

My parents are huge Beatles fans, much like many other people of their generation, and I wish I had enough money to get them this Beatles magnetic hair game. Of course, knowing my mom, who is a cake decorator, she would get icing and chocolate all over it.

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV

The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend

Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

One song, just one song? At first I thought this would be impossible then it suddenly clicked: While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

It’s brilliant for many reasons. It’s a beautifully written song. It’s written by Harrison. It features Eric Clapton on guitar. And last but not least, it features on the Withnail & I soundtrack.

My father raised me right, The Beatles were all I listened to until I turned 12 – then I deviated and relapsed my Fab Four addiction come 18 years of age. I listened to Let It Be at the wind-down of a night out during the wee hours of the morning, and one song in particular stood out. Across the Universe. I’m currently working on a type-based based on this song’s soothing lyrics.

Im a huge fan of the beatles (you could tell by looking at my email account) and i would be thrilled to recieve a prize as grand as this

with this being said i express my regret in the fact that i cant pick a single beatles song to be the greatest because for me it all depends on my mood. listening to songs such as “here comes the sun”, “dear prudence”, or “ob-la-di, ob-la-da” can brighten any sad day no matter how bad that day may be while if im angry i can just listen to “helter skelter” and be able to vent. some days when i just want to be alone and think ill listen to songs such as “across the universe” and “something.” But no matter what mood im in i would always be able to listen to songs like “a day in the life”, “while my guitar gently weeps”, “blackbird”, and of course “happiness is a warm gun.”

i believe that their ability to captivate a wide range of emotions in their songs is one of the reasons they are still being credited as one of the greatest bands in the history of music

I Wanna Hold Your Hand – cuz that song, and The Beatles, made so much possible. It was – or they were – the bridge between generations that allowed ultra-conservative car salesmen to suddenly want to grow bushy sideburns; allowed my 30-something-in-a-small town mom to drive a sporty ’67 yellow Cougar; allowed Steinbach girls to wear tight jeans – and later mini-skirts – to high school; allowed me to dream of leaving our little town some day and visiting far off places like – ugh, I later learned – Liverpool. My cousin Bonnie had the 45 and she could play it, in her room, but not on Sundays. She played it for me and let me wear her Beatles cap. She did the frug. Mine strangely is
“i’m looking Through You” from Rubber Soul I’m from London – born in Liverpool, Aigburth – like Mr Lennon
Fantastic groovy Hammond Organ not to be missed and Paul Mccartney being growly. (Blackbird coming in second)
When I looked it up i found I was not alone:
* Steve Earle included a version on his Train a Comin’ album.
* Mark Heard covered the song on his album Second Hand.
* The Wallflowers recorded a version of the song for the film I Am Sam whose soundtrack was composed entirely of contemporary Beatles covers.
* Ted Leo and the Pharmacists recorded a version of the song for the 2005 release of This Bird Has Flown – A 40th Anniversary Tribute to the Beatles’ Rubber Soul, an album composed of Beatles covers by various artists.
* The Muppets team performed a cover of the song for a special Halloween episode (guest starring Vincent Price) in season one of The Muppet Show.
* Davey Graham covered this on his 1966 album Midnight Man.
* The Punkles did a cover of this song on their third album Pistol.
* Tyler Hilton covers the song on the soundtrack for the film Imagine That.
* The Rutles’ song “It’s Looking Good” is based on this song.

# The song appears toward the end of the trailer of Ghost Town, and also during the opening scene of the film.
# Director Wes Anderson wanted to use the Anthology 2 version of this song over the final scene of his movie The Royal Tenenbaums, but could not easily clear the rights in the wake of Harrison’s death, and hence used the Van Morrison song that appears in the film in its place.

“she’s well acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand like a lizard on a windowpane…”

Despite there being so many, I’d have to say ‘Happiness Is A Warm Gun’…the lyrics, way it progresses from section to section, and the break in John’s voice at the end…

I had no idea when i woke today that I would face such a gut wrenchingly tough decision, but when it comes to personal favourites sentimentality trumps artistic triumph – they can, of course, mean the same thing – so in my life ‘You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away’ has had the most profound impact. It is not often enough that you hear a singer mean what they say as much as Lennon meant that. An incredible vocal delivery from that young man!

You really do have to hide your love away.

Funnily enough, my introduction to the work of artist and illustrator J. Otto Seibold was through a Norstrom holiday display many years back. The entire store was bedecked in Olive the Other Reindeer regalia. It took me forever to part with my Olive the Reindeer shopping bags, so when I later discovered that Olive was, in fact, a recurring story book character (not simply some character fabricated solely for the holiday display), I was pretty psyched and have been a fan of all the ragtag J. Otto Seibold characters and books ever since.

Did you ever wonder what goes on inside a banana before you eat it? This photo illustrates the horrors these little yellow mates go through. We’re now seriously concerned for the emotional balance of the apples, melons and cabbages Dimitri Tsykalov tortured for his art.

God save the Queen. Oh, and Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Steve Jones and Paul Cook too. Read more

These fascinating mosaics of twenty-first century human habitation are proof that planned housing isn’t always dull and distasteful, for the bird’s-eye photographer at least. What may be endless rows of generic streets and blocks at ground level suddenly become giant patchwork quilts from the air, perhaps in a weird way proving that there is more to life than what meets the pedestrian’s eye. I’ve seen a lot of strange things on the Internet, but this Tumblr just baffles me. It’s called Animals with Casts, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. Picture after picture of different animals wearing casts. Read more

There’s something quite attractively kitsch about the Lucky Dragons’ latest release, Dream Island Laughing Language. It’s undoubtedly unusual, and not too friendly on the ears, but something warm and fuzzy keeps creeping out of the broken drum rhythms and looped vocals. It’s a mish-mash of jangly folk licks, Squarepusher-style drum ‘n bass with a few Coco Rosie-esque experimental sound effects thrown in: intriguing, original, and fairly hard to describe!

We’ve followed Sydney’s ZANEROBE from the sporty retro ‘Summer World Series’ collection to their beautifully cut, pure wool classic suits. ZANEROBE’s latest collection – Game Day, Sunday – represents an opulent collision somewhere between the two. The tailored outerware collection includes woolen duffles, leather bombers and wax-coated twill jackets, all with the typical ZANEROBE attention to detail in the texture, trim, fit and wash. My friend Josh Van Horne, a local Baltimore artist, did this amazing mural in our neighborhood that depicts the history of this warehouse-laden area.
