Jandek
by Mystery has shrouded Jandek since the ‘band’s’ music arrived on the scene in 1978 (although calling Jandek a ‘band’ is rather misleading). Since then, Jandek has produced over 60 self-released, often atonal avant-garde blues and folk, albums.
Widely revered by a fan-base consisting of stalwart rockers Sonic Youth, Jandek is believed to be a one-man operation. Part of the musical project’s allure is the often ambiguous mix of performance art with the music. A nameless ‘representative’ from Corwood Industries (Jandek’s label) played the ‘band’s’ first show in 2004. Since then, this ‘representative’ has appeared a few times a year to play with some of the best musicians in the world.
Jandek will be playing September 6th at Issue Project Room with consummate drummer, Ryan Sawyer, Susan Alcorn, Shazad Ismaily, C. Spencer Yeh, and the Nate Wooley Trio. If you’re anywhere near the Eastern Seaboard, this performance in New York is not to be missed.

Kim Gordon’s Mirror/Dash label
As a So-Cal suburban teen, I was a die-hard Sonic Youth lover. So when Kim Gordon launched X-Girl clothing in 1994, I became an insta-fan. My favorite T-shirt was electric blue and said X-Girl in neon orange and pink and wearing it immediately helped me separate the kids I’d like to know from the ones I wouldn’t: every jock would say. ‘X-Girl, does that mean you’re a dude now?’, while every music nerd would give a knowing nod of alliance. I still mourn its American, demise so I’m thrilled that Kim Gordon is back in the fashion game with a new line called Mirror/Dash, coming out February 16 at Urban Outfitters. The collection has a feminine, tomboy feel, much like Gordon herself, and features a slouchy pocket t-shirt dress, a casually sexy wrap dress, and the necessary blazer staple, among other items. Krewe de Soul Masquerade Ball charity event
Do you live in the New York area and wonder what you’ll be doing Thursday, October 29th? How about you get your Halloween-prepped-dancing-ass to the Bell House for the Krewe de Soul Masquerade Ball to check out musical acts such as The High and Mighty Brass Band, Mighty Fine, and Tunde Adebimpe, from TV on the Radio [picture above]. Seven bands and three DJs are lined up to make you move your rump, which will be necessary to work off all of the free food you’ve consumed (get there early for the gastronomical delights). Oh, and feel good, too, knowing that proceeds from the event will benefit the Abeola House of New Orleans; a non-profit formed by parents whose children attended one of 200 schools and daycare centers that didn’t reopen after Hurricane Katrina.

Miru Kim is known as the ‘naked urban photographer‘, a fearless artist who walks around naked in abandoned spots in cities such as New York, Paris and Berlin. She has photographed various familiar urban settings, such as abandoned subway stations, tunnels, aqueducts, factories, hospitals, and shipyards. Her series, Naked City Spleen, is a dissection of places built and forgotten and somehow exposed by the naked body of the artist.
