
Food + Sex Magazine launched
Bright illustrations and bold designs line the pages of Food + Sex magazine: a new “collage art food” publication that explores how food and its environment are shaped by erotic desires.
Within its pages, artwork and essays — some more beautiful than others, some more shockingly graphic too — woven together in an attempt to ’seek the cosmic and reflect on the elemental connectedness in life that opens us to new ways of being’. (Whether that makes sense is still unclear to me). However existential or not, contributions are supplied by those in the food ‘underground’, with articles from the more subdued We are All Hopeful Farmers, to the less subtle Tripping Balls on the Magic Penis. What more to say?

Made-in-Montreal independent art magazine SNAP! brings out its eighth issue this month and gets a little bit gritty and pensive with their SURVIVAL theme. Colarado photographer Adrian Hanft creates images that are charmingly imperfect, employing a huge collection of vintage cameras that he modifies at home, or occasionally builds from scratch. He recently created a series of solargraphs — exposures that last from hours to months – using pinhole cameras, and in the past has fashioned his own equipment from Lego blocks, with startling results. I met Caroline Thaw at Brooklyn’s Third Ward in one of the courses I taught. The first time I saw samples of her work, I was happily overwhelmed by her diversity of styles, her cute yet twisted characters, the radiant and infinite beauty in every piece she made, her delicate line, and her strong sense of style and scenographic space. Part of her work’s charm comes from her experience in theater design designing sets and custumes for productions that traveled around the world (she is from England, originally), and her tremendous love for kids.
Musicians in Jacksonville, Florida, often plop themselves amongst breakfasting families to nurse their hangovers at the Fox Restaurant. The food is a step above normal greasy spoon fare, but is just as cheap, with a full breakfast costing as little as three dollars. They even offer bananas as an alternative to grits or hash browns.
Abstracted geometric forms, peculiar clockwork pieces, and a sense of childhood play; I can’t quite pinpoint why I love the jewellery designs of Sydney creative, Elke Kramer, but I do know that her jewellery is unique and off-beat, yet widely accessible and wearable. Read more
