Whimsy & Spice is everything nice
What do you get when you combine an ex-executive pastry chef and a successful graphic designer? Well, if you’re in Brooklyn, the answer is Whimsy & Spice. Here, a creative husband and wife team merged their respective talents to produce decadent artisanal sweets all handmade, hand cut, hand rolled, and hand packaged in Brooklyn. Blending a love for aromatic spices with exceptional ingredients, Whimsy & Spice’s treats are unique, creative, and sometimes unexpected, though almost always mouth-wateringly delicious.
Their distinctive line of sweets include the usual cakes, cookies, cupcakes and tarts, as well as the more curious shortbread biscotti in flavors like honey lavender and cinnamon chocolate malt. Oozing, luscious brownies sandwiched between delightful layers of creamy dulce de leche, and airy, pillow-soft homemade marshmallows in caramel, cardamom, and maple flavors are equally innovative and inspiring. Whilst strolling through Greenpoint the other night, I came across a shop selling Liddabit candies. I just had to have the Beer & Pretzel Caramels and the Honeycomb Candy. The Beer & Pretzel treats are complex, with the beer adding a heartiness missing from typical salted caramels, and the Honeycomb Candy tasted much like a Crunchie bar found in the UK. Liddabit candies contain local and seasonal ingredients and you can purchase these and other heavenly sweets through their site, as well as at The Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene. This clip had such an impact on me when it first came out, back in the day. There’s just something so poignant about the idea that some people you pass on the street everyday have a little bit more insight into their world — our world — than we could ever imagine.
