Boy Without God

Boy Without God is the solo project of 23-year-old Boston native Gabriel Birnbaum, who was part of the violent power-electronics of Catholic Skin, the saxophone fronted spazz-rock of The Abraham Lincoln Brigade, blog-buzz darlings Drug Rug, Virgin Records signings Eli Reed and campfire singalong folk-pop group The Tiny Tornadoes. Since 2006, Birnbaum has shifted his focus to his solo-songwriting under the name Boy Without God, releasing six home-recorded EPs and two full-lengths. His latest album is Your Body Is Your Soul, applying his everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach to songs about the important things in life: sex, love, death. We have his song Holy Holy Little Fist [listen below] available for free download from our Music Download section [psst, it's in the third column of the site]

Boy Without God’s Secret Playlist

Gabriel Birnbaum, aka Boy Without God, is a songwriter in the vein of Leonard Cohen, mingling straightforward melodic songs with the long-form composition style he picked up writing fifteen-minute free jazz epics during high school. Your Body is Your Soul, his first studio full length, was released this summer. We asked him about the music that will inspire his next recording, and he started with the Cuddle Magic song, Expectations [listen below]: ‘So well written and eternal sounding that when I first heard it, I thought it was a cover because I was positive I’d heard it before. It also has all the amazing little orchestral touches that make every Cuddle Magic song so great: that weird pizzicato part after the first chorus, the drum beat inverting over the second verse, the way the vocals pull back really hard on the time, the shaker entering for the whistling part’. New Banksy artwork angers the Catholic Church

Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. And who are we to disagree? Read more

Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design

Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

Karl Kwasny, also known as Monaux, has just embarked on a rather ambitious digital art book project - he’ll be publishing one illustration per week for two years. It’ll be one playful book when he’s done; you might recognise the Australian illustrator’s style from some recently released Insight51 and Mooks tees.

Simple, colorful and somewhat esoteric, I really dig the work of New York illustrator, Rich Tu, a new SVA graduate student. It was something else to see his finely textured images blown up to poster size and beautifully displayed at the recent SVA student show. Read more

If you ever happen to find yourself riding across the mid-west on horseback with an iPod jangling about in your holster, be sure to let Calexico soundtrack the experience. They’re cleverly fusing a range of genres, mixing some good old country with US indie, a bit of jazz and even, in 2003’s Feast of Wire, some smatterings of electronica. Lead singer Joey Burns gives a healthy amount of cowboy twang and the soaring orchestral background and sweet country guitar licks add a real atmosphere to the music.

Listen to the Calexico song, Convict Pool.

Australian-born creative, Marc Newson, is considered to be one of the most influential designers of the past few decades. Having originally studied jewellery and sculpture at Sydney College of the Arts, ‘he started experimenting with furniture design as a student and, after graduating in 1984, was awarded a grant from the Australian Crafts Council, and staged an exhibition — featuring the Lockheed Lounge — at the Roslyn Oxley Gallery in Sydney’. Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life. The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images. When the pusher is activated, the dial springs to life in 3D, with an LED light and afterglow effect. Read more
