Ale House, Portsmouth, New Hampshire
On a recent visit to New Hampshire, I had the good fortune to land at the Ale House Inn, located in the heart of historic downtown Portsmouth. Located in a converted nineteenth century brewery, the Inn is a perfect blend of clean modern and rustic design (In homage to the old brewery, the owners are avid collectors of local breweriana and display a great collection of antique bottles in the sitting room), with a cozy B&B intimacy.
One of the owners, Douglas Palardy, was as wonderful as could be in helping us to wrangle last minute reservations at the tastiest restaurants in town, not to mention swooping in to save the day in a 4 am. emergency. Considering we barely made a dent in all the things we wanted to do in Portsmouth during our two day stay, I’m already plotting my return, where I will certainly be staying at the Ale House Inn again. At the wonderful Black Trumpet in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, not a bite passed our lips that didn’t send us ooh-ing and aah-ing into an utter state of bliss. Despite his name, I’m guessing German illustrator Frederik Jurk must be a cool guy because his images, his limited palette and gorgeous textured line work are awesome.
I was immediately taken with the work of California artist Zack Paul. Especially the images created on various bits of driftwood and found natural objects. The most perfect backdrop to his clean, geometric images.
