Amelia Santiago’s dog sculptures

Working out of Portland, Oregon, Amelia Santiago makes wool fiber sculpture portraits of dogs using needle felting. She has made more than three hundred sculptures in the past three years, based on photos sent to her by dog owners. ‘I pay great attention to the details of markings’, she says, ‘as well as try to capture the personality of the dog through his or her eyes’.

Vibrant, colourful photos of New York in 1971

We love the voyeuristic thrill of these photos by Gentle Giant that ran on the Retronaut website and reveal a vibrant, thriving, bustling New York in 1971 that looks vaguely similar to the New York that I experienced between 2006 and 2011. Minus the beehive hairdoes, flares, and the big red phone booths, of course. Read more

Castevet are a promising new experimental black metal band out of New York. They have a much more complex and technical approach than other bands of this ilk, revealing post-hardcore and death metal influences as evidenced by guitarist Andrew Hock’s work in deathgrind outfit Biolich and Boston jazz/death/doom band Ehnahre.

It’s official, I’m back into jewellery after detoxing from the 2001 chandelier earring craze. Aurélie Bidermann used to work at Sotheby’s New York in their Impressionist and Contemporary Art department but has been slowly raising though the ranks as one of the most innovative jewellery designers around today. Her website doesn’t showcase her fantastic Spring 09 pieces. Check out the accessory report on style.com for a good look at some of her new work.
