Scott Hove’s Cakeland
At first glance, Scott Hove’s Cakeland seems impossibly lovely — a pink-frosted, sugary fairyland. Until you notice a bunch of his delicious creations have sprouted fangs. Then it’s kind of creepy. The walk-through installation contains multiple cakey hallways, mirrored passages and gently-lit examples of spongy goodness, the icing etched with tools like some tasty Neolithic cave-art. It’s a sugar-rush nightmare come to life. Yummy.

There’s no question I’ve spent more time looking for waves than riding them. Apparently, that’s part of the fun. I got to check out Extra Golden the other night at the Floristree in the H & H Building in downtown Baltimore. Despite a bill of heady, contemplative, experimental music that preceded the DC-based band, the crowd was chomping at the bit to see them when they finally hit the stage well past 1am. It’s still cold and rainy here in Charm City, but these guys made it feel like summer with their sunny blend of Kenyan benga music and guitar-driven psych rock.

Pioneering Australian designer Kara Smith can definitely give Urban Originals a run for their money. She creates the most innovative handbags for those that truly want to stand out. Detailed with lovely pockets and vintage buttons, Smith’s retro inspired designs literally transform original vintage fabrics into ‘one-off’ clutches, handbags, totes and accessories. I’m in love with her clutches! But yes, if you missed her over the week end at the Blue Mountain’s Leura Village Fair, she’s stocked in Glebe and Sydney’s Todae store, as well as at a variety of online outlets.
