Buenos Aires’ Massive Education Weapon

Raúl Lemesoff is the creator of the Massive Education Weapon, which is a kind of RV sculpture that contains thousands of books that are given away to children and poor people. Lemesoff also accepts donations during the trips. This ‘weapon’ is the only vehicle Lemesoff owns and that’s why you can see him cruising around the streets of Buenos Aires when he has some personal business to attend or when he goes for a drink. Bars, shantytowns, rural houses and poor districts are just some of the destinations at which Lemesoff’s peculiar vehicle gives away books.

Fun summer video for Una Catarata de Caramelos

This is a perfect pre-summer video from Mariano Gilmore and Belle. I was honoured to be part of the creation of this video by invading sunny Buenos Aires with multi-coloured balloons, drinking a couple of cold cans of beer, and having a good reason to enjoy the city among friends and great music.

New collage illustrations by Max-O-Matic

Max-O-Matic, aka Máximo Tuja, is one of my favorite illustrators. He was born in Buenos Aires and had his first solo show in Barcelona in 2008. He makes beautiful, wierd and detailed collages, which are just so much fun to look at. Read more

Casa Mun, Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is having its culinary coming of age and innovative trends in eating abound in this thriving, South American urban hotspot. One of the hottest fads around is the guerilla dining movement, where underground eateries and off-the-beaten-path spots are flourishing in chef’s homes throughout the city. Head into Buenos Aires’ Barrio Norte neighborhood and — possibly without knowing it at first — you’ll find Casa Mun. Read more

Rinkya survival gear for cats and dogs

It is known that the Japanese are very passionate about robotic pets, but now they’re also orried about their real pets in case of an earthquake. The new Rinkya survival gear for cats and dogs is not only a shiny vest for Lassie, but is also flame resistant. It includes small bags with water and cookies for your beloved pet to have something to chew while you run away from the disaster area. But that’s not all. The survival gear also includes a set of aromatherapy oils to help your pet to relax during a disaster. It costs 38,000 yen (approximately 375 dollars) via Rinkya Stores.

Clocky: a moving alarm clock

Clocky is an alarm clock that notices if you don’t wake up and starts moving all over your bedroom so you won’t be able to catch it and turn the alarm off. Its main intention is to hide and keep ringing untl you wake up. This tinny alarm clock has two all-terrain wheels that can endure all surfaces.

Japanese Bug Fights

Only in Japan? Perhaps. The Japanese Bug Fights website promotes real bug fights, with combatants such as scorpions, spiders, mantis and giant beetles. The rules are simple: only two bugs must be engaged in the fight. External weapons are not allowed and the fight lasts till one of opponents dies. Hmmm. Read more

Loving Brooklyn-based artist Paul Brainard’s crazy, collage-like style of drawing and painting, which are overloaded with skulls, magazine images, pop-informed iconography, and urban signage. Read more

If you lose a limb that really sucks, but it’s your chance to have a prosthesis that might even be better than what you had originally. You could become a weird cyborg superhero!

Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more

If you’re in New Orleans and you love barbeque, make sure to stop by The Joint in the Bywater neighborhood. Their brisket is outstanding, and for under $11 for a pound of the fatty, delicious beef and two sides, it’s a super good deal. Their ribs are also pretty good, but seriously, the brisket is the jam.

A while back, McSweeney’s posted Prescription Drug or Metal Band?, a list of words that were either the name of a metal band or a pharmaceutical, on their website. Read more

If Pharrell’s calling these guys ‘geniuses’, you’d better watch out! Chester French are Ivy League prep boys from Massachusetts who have mastered an interesting Beatlesque sound tinged with Motown influences. When, in May 2007, the duo — D.A. and Max — completed their recording and their degrees (in African American Studies and Social Anthropology respectively), they were snapped up by Pharrell Williams’ label Star Trak.

Baltimore Mural by Josh Van Horne

My friend Josh Van Horne, a local Baltimore artist, did this amazing mural in our neighborhood that depicts the history of this warehouse-laden area.

Set up in 2011, Rebel Unlit is a printing collaboration between London based Artists Neil Butler and Shanney Mulcahy. They make short run screen-printed t-shirts and limited edition prints from their studio in East London. All the t shirts are fair traded and printed by hand and, as a result, each one is unique.
